The Boy in the Branch

Set at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur, India, this is a film about the indoctrination of young Hindu boys by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (the RSS), India's foremost Hindu fundamentalist organization. Juxtaposing the activities of two different RSS 'shakhas' or branches, the film documents the stories and the games, the rituals and the play that socialize the young RSS recruit.

Big Fat Slenderella

Big Fat Slenderella looks at dieting from the fat person's point of view. In this work, excerpts from documentary interviews with fat people are juxtaposed with fat animals in captivity by the inventive use of wipe effects. Commercials for products like The Poodle Diet Recipe Collection satirize the mainstream obsession with dieting and their fear of gaining weight. Despite the conventional wisdom dished out by medical practitioners, studies have shown that dieting simply does not work for 95% of the population. Why are we still encouraged to diet? Could it be profits and the fact that if someone is dieting, that's all they have energy for? The fat experts in Slenderella are all fat themselves, and tell stories of the many diets and medically administered amphetamine "cures" they have tried over the years.

The two-thumbed hand

Three sequences of approximately five minutes each. The first one, Base 12, argues that in the distant past, man had indeed six fingers and two thumbs. This is based on paleontological elements and analysis of the duodecimal system. The second sequence, Corpus Callosum, starts with the hypothesis that the evolutionary process will lead mankind to a hand with six fingers and two thumbs, more appropriate to the art of painting. The speaker reviews the changes that such an evolution would require from the brain. The third sequence, Searching Researcher, shows a scientist at work, answering with much reluctance an imaginary interviewer. He questions the possibility of popularizing his work on the hand with six fingers and two thumbs and criticizes, with much condescension, the general public’s concern for practical implementations of his research.

The two playmates dress up drag-esque for this moving portrait of a woman’s lifetime struggle with gender and sexuality.
