On the 28th of October 1884 Daniel Paul Schreber, candidate of the National Liberal Party in Chemnitz, suffered a heavy defeat at the elections of the German Reichstag. He was taken up in the mental clinic of the Leipzig University soon afterwards. To his rehabilition he wrote an extensive piece of work, "Denkwürdigkeiten eines Nervenkranken" (Memoirs of My Nervous Illness), which was published in 1903 and led to his temporary dismissal. Hereby Schreber became the most quoted psychiatric patient in scientific literature. The third part was realized by Peter Tscherkassy based on a concept by Ernst Schmidt Jr.

A voice-over soundtrack repeats some common heterosexist lines: If only they didn’t flaunt it… It’s nothing personal but… A simple image, consisting of two women embracing, contradicts the soundtrack. This video examines the resilience of lesbian desire in the face of relentless homophobia.

My New Roommate

Michael moves in with Ariella for several months. He doesn't know anyone in town, but often arrives at home with stories of sexual adventures that happen on his way into town or back, or between errands in Halifax. As this is much the opposite of what's going on in Ariella's life at the time, she is intrigued, but also puzzled. Michael's cruising stories capture her curiosity and they often talk, but one day when he comes home she's equipped with an alter ego and a video camera.

Parolé

Loosely based on a case study by Havelock Ellis of a lesbian who murders her lover, Parolé is an experimental film which examines the construction of sexuality through the discourses of medicine and psychology. These institutions have historically linked sexual identity to criminal and pathological behaviour while naturalizing this construct through "scientific" studies.

Sea of Time

A moving journey through a process of birth and death, Sea of Time tells the story of Gaulke’s attempts to become pregnant through artificial insemination during a period of time while a dear friend was dying of AIDS. Written in collaboration with her life partner, Sue Maberry, it raises issues about gay and lesbian people creating family. The footage includes a trip to Bali and is offset by an evocative score by composer Miriam Cutler. Sea of Time was originally created for the exhibition In Terms of Time curated by Ruth Weisberg and Rabbi Laura Geller at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, January 1994.

Water in the Ear

A girl who believes her lover is swimming in the water in her ears decides to take action one day. She visits her health teacher at the high school she graduated from to complain about her physical problems, and also goes to an ear, nose and throat specialist to consult about her ears, which are prone to water ingress. This is a semi-documentary in which the filmmaker herself plays the role of the girl and goes out with the tool of a film camera to reveal the internal chaos. (IFF, 1994).

Have you ever felt like punching a person on a train? Sunao is a boy who understands that there is no right thing or right person in the world, but he is obsessed with the fact that there are too many wrong things and wrong people in the world. In the closed room of the train, a microcosm of the world, are the scenes Sunao encounters a mirage or reality? Is the other boy who follows him an illusion created by Sunao, or is he an alter ego of the world? This is an instantaneous spatial film that expresses through a boy with an inner weakness the fantasy that everyone has of being able to hit a noisy woman or a pompous man who happens to be in the same carriage as him. The filming on the train, which must have been done guerrilla style, makes us feel the speed at which the train runs.

I'm telling you to be a great person like my dad. Tokuichi was at one time a prominent figure in an amateur band. Now he's unemployed, behind on his rent and alimony for his divorced wife and children. One day, his old bandmate, Kiichi, invites him to be the singer of his new band. When he goes to his shop to ask her about it, he finds the woman he had met before waiting for him with a message from Kiichi. The two hit it off and go to Kiichi's training camp, but when they arrive, the band has already broken up. A man who is clumsy and always misses his luck, a man who eats up other people's dreams and is always on the move, and a woman who stands dangerously between the two. The more the story progresses, the more we see the many facets of each of them, and the more the story lingers. From the noisy dialogues and cuts, music can be heard.
