Delirium

Defiantly humorous in its tone, Delirium reflects Faber’s mother’s personal experience with what has been classified as “female hysteria.” While never reducing her mother’s condition to a single explanation, Delirium firmly and convincingly links her illness to the historically embattled position women hold in a patriarchal culture. The video layers haunting imagery and humorous iconoclasm, referencing everything from television episodes of I Love Lucy to Charcot’s 19th Century photos of female hysterics. Delirium contends that female mental illness must be understood within the political/social arena, and that in many instances women’s reactions of violence, anger, and depression are indeed sane reactions to abhorrent situations.

Sacred Lies, Civil Truths

Amid a galloping onslaught of misinformation and violence, lesbians and gay men in the U.S. are struggling harder than ever to claim their civil and human rights. While the insurgent Religious Right mobilizes to implement anti-gay measures state by state, the lesbian and gay community is activating to turn the tide of discrimination and keep its eyes on federal gay rights at the same time. The film is a document of the religious right's blatant and hateful attacks against the lesbian and gay community and it reveals the real agenda of the Christian Right to gain power and impose a "Biblical rule".'

An allegorical found footage film mix, featuring fragments of TV ads of Calvin Klein fragrances, feature films about the Nazis, and Leni Riefenstahl’s works from the 1930s. With added iconic images of the Third Reich – photos of Nazi architecture and sculptures by Albert Speer and Arno Breker. Digging into the “unconscious” of contemporary advertising, the artist traces its aesthetic genealogy. Toporowicz’s analyses (with the element of allegorical meaning added to the films) reveal the extent to which contemporary commercialised visual culture maintains fascination with Nazi aesthetics.

Moving from the initial struggle for gay law reform, to the revolutionary politics spurned by Stonewall to the homophobic policies initiated under Thatcher and the New Right, this film is a celebration of the achievements and struggles of gay and lesbian activists. Funny, inspiring and bound to get your feet tapping “The Gay Rock and Roll Years” is a great introduction to queer history. Songs featured include Doris Day singing “Secret Love”, The Kinks doing “Lola”, Sylvester singing “You Make Me feel (Mighty Real) and Culture Club asking “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?”. Water into Fire

Water into Fire is a mix of documentation of his performative piece and other scenes. In this piece, the artist continues his search seen in his earlier works for identity and placement in Canada's multicultural and First Nations arena. Longboy outs himself as a First Nations FAG, who is living with HIV and abruptly severs attached preconceptions of two-spirited peoples, forcing the First Nation's community to address him rather than the disease. In a contemplative and meditative search, Longboy recollects how HIV/AIDS has affected him and the community around him, revealing a strength through loss.

This was a site-specific work for spectra-board urban screen located at BC Place stadium in Vancouver. This Day Without Art project, curated by Scott Watson, was launched on Dec. 1, 1993 as part of AIDS Awareness Day. I Love You appeared in four languages: English, French, Chinese, and Coast-Salish. The two spectra-boards on the exterior of the stadium is visible to commuters on two bridges and surrounding streets and buildings in downtown Vancouver.

High Rise and Fall

Documentary about Queen Elizabeth Square, Sir Basil Spence's block of Brutalist style flats built to replace the Gorbal's tenements in Glasgow during the 1960s. His vision was based on architect Le Corbusier's ideas and inspired him to transform the Gorbals into a Modernist Utopia. The film is about the life and times of one building told by some of the people involved in its history. The block was dynamited in 1993 amidst controversy and the death of a spectator. It is mentioned in Pevsner's Notable Buildings of Britain. This film was shown on BBC Scotland's Ex-S strand in 1993. Produced by May Miller and directed by Conrad Blakemore.
