In Flow, completed in 1991, Wenyi Hou, the Chinese woman migrant artist being interviewed, struggles with the impossibility of identity formation through speech and performs instead a documentary scene that has obviously been rehearsed in order to highlight the unhumanness of being human. She asks whether it is possible that we all originated from and could be reducible to grape, in the farm of bunches, connecting and consumable, yet all brilliant and different in their own contexts, or in her words, “in another kind of time.”

The Good Wife of Tokyo

Janauba

Santos constructs a lyrical meditation on his native Brazilian landscape, its culture and its inhabitants. Santos pays tribute to two important historical figures from Brazilian cinema — Humberto Mauro and Mario Peixoto — and their films The Ox-cart and The Limit. Contemporary footage, recorded in Death Valley and in Janauba, a town in the artist's native state of Minas Gerais, describes landscapes that appear to be untouched by time. In contrast, the reality of their inhabitants suggests an idealized, yet never realized, future.

Tight Right White

Staged in a loft on Lafayette Street, across from the Public Theatre, the piece used the film adaptation of Kyle Onstott’s 1957 novel, “Mandingo,” as its primary script. Sitting on cushions on the floor, audience members had to crane their necks to see the proceedings. Enter Moishe Pipik (the amazing Tony Torn), a long-nosed Jewish character in a huckster’s checked suit. When he pisses in a pot of earth, a money tree springs up. Moishe has a friend, Blaster, a black teen-age junkie and drug dealer. They’re refugees, in a sense—racist and anti-Semitic parodies of Jewish liberal identification with blackness. Sometimes they hang out as if they were on a talk show, their chatter intercut with all that “Mandingo” mess, Mandingo’s black phallus looming in the minds of the white people who constructed their dream of an antebellum South on black backs.

In the video works of Ema Kugler, mythology is inscribed in the rituals of everyday life, this time it is the theme of Hydra with many faces. It is illustrated by individual scenes with actors in leather costumes (the author's creations), which restrict their movement and thus already emphasize the separation of man from nature. The last trace of connection - the ritual relationship between man and bull, which is again based on human cruelty to animals - ends with blood, which on a symbolic level also pervades the whole image.

About Dogs And People

When I first arrived in America, (from my native Slovakia), I neither spoke nor understood a word of English and I soon found myself in the position of a mute creature. Perhaps it was this experience of muteness that inspired me to make a film about America from the perspective of a creature that neither speaks nor understands this country’s language or ways. Dogs can’t speak, but they can tell a lot about the society in which they live. About Dogs and People is an account of my journey across America to explore its’ canine culture. The film is made in the form of an essay: it uses authentic footage, but presents the material in a subjective way. Derived from my experience with non-verbal communication, the film “speaks” through imagery, using the vocabulary of archetypal gesture, tone, melody and rhythm.

Jacob's Ladder

An apocryphal tale from the Book of Genesis. Jacob, the son of Isaac, sees in a dream a staircase, the base of which rests on the earth, and the top reaches heaven; angels ascend and descend on it. Every step of the ladder and every movement along it in this vision has its own meaning. Marc Chagall, using a metaphorical image from Scripture, presented in his paintings the interweaving and intertwining of the lives of the inhabitants of the hinterland, each of whom has his own Jacob's ladder, along which angels move — the arbiters of their destinies.

Includes archival footage of Salgado’s life and commentary by artists, photographers, critics, and writers such as Jorge Armado, Robert Delpire, Jimmy Fox, and Arthur Miller.
