A Day in the Life of a Consumer

The film shows one day from waking up in the morning all the way to waking up again the next morning. The everyday situations that many commercials are made of, the little dramas that they create and solve through the product or service they sell, are stitched together into one day. This is a film about the everyday in (German, or Western-European) society because the commercials are part of the everyday of most people (everyone who watches television) and they depict an ideal image of society. The film abundantly uses repetition as an editing technique, in visual ways as described above, but also because commercials can be read in different ways. For instance, Brat baking foil shows up at the evening dinner sequence, when an ovendish is put on the table, and again later on in the sequence about going out to a classic concert, because the clip has classic music.

Issei Sagawa: Excuse Me For Living

A filmed biography of Issei Sagawa, the Japanese student who shot his Dutch girlfriend, cut her up with a meat carver and boiled the remains. He then ate her. Several months later he was declared insane. While in a psychiatric hospital in France he wrote an account of his crime `In the Fog' which sold 200,000 copies. The French released him in 1984 on the condition that he remained in a mental hospital in Japan. One year later the Japanese hospital released him. Since then he has written five books on crime and is a minor celebrity lionised by the avant garde. Sagawa speaks extensively in the programme and reads passages from his books.

Forced to defend himself Greg seemingly kills his beautiful hosts beloved pet and in attempting to cover up it's demise the night descends in to a chaotic night of misunderstood intentions which neither will ever forget...that's if either lives to remember it.

Philosophy in the Bedroom

A home-movie paean to the Marquis de Sade, Philosophy in the Bedroom plumbs the depths of boudoir small talk. In the first part, a newly-acquainted odd couple discuss desire—and lack thereof—over a bag of potato chips. In the second part, a recumbent woman describes her partner and herself as "the John and Yoko of the '90s." ("We're in bed most of the time," she explains.) The two read aloud, nap and argue beneath the blankets. Ahwesh manipulates the image through chemical and mechanical means, gradually shifting the color scheme from blue to yellow.

Filmed in Quebec in 1993, this concert souvenir captures Celine Dion as she turned the corner from pop contender to platinum princess. Long a star in Canada, and a major draw throughout the Francophone world, the Québecois vocalist was still a relatively new, if increasingly successful, commodity stateside. A clutch of single hits, augmented by two big soundtrack themes, hadn't entirely erased the suspicion that Dion's career was being bolted together on an assembly line not far from Mariah Carey's--apart from frequent overlaps in production support, both singers relied on similar mixtures of sweeping ballads and crisp, uptempo dance workouts, and both were notorious for their vocal gymnastics.

Flotte is French slang for rain or downpour. This work was taken on a rainy day at the Abt Gallery in Waseda, Tokyo, a few days before his solo exhibition. If I can't shoot that day, I have to give up on the new work, and I can't help but worry about the rain. Before I saw the rush, I was worried about whether the picture would come out properly, but the rain came out beautifully, so I gave it the title "FLOTTE". It is constructed so that the speed changes intermittently in one cut (actually, it is meant to appear that way).

The 54th, the record of that summer, is, as the name suggests, the record of the 54-day long struggle for 'nullification of an ex officio sign' by Hyundai Precision Industry workers in Ulsan in the hot summer of 1993. Prior to collective bargaining on wages, the company secretly signed a unilateral agreement (signed ex officio) with one of the labor union leaders and tried to put it into practice. The workers of Ulsan Hyundai Precision Industry were enraged at the sense of betrayal of the union leader they trusted and the despicable treatment of the company, and for 54 days in the hot summer, they start a strike to get a fair price for their labor.
