This film constitutes a passage between my two other films, Trompe-la-Mort and Quartier des bachelors or... I would say an experience of "cogito" with the camera/a narcissistic experience which is parasitized (contaminated?) by passers-by. The sirens, and then this void. What distinguishes the "cogito" of the filmmaker from the "cogito" of a madman? This question already discredits/tympanizes the possibility of a purely phenomenal “cogito”: I see myself, does this mean that I exist? The interfilmic references of the soundtrack generate meaning already in the direction of a dispersion of the ego.

Dennis and Julie Parks left the eastern seaboard in the early 1960's, settling in the former mining boomtown of Tuscarora, Nevada, population twelve. They spent the next twenty-five years operating and expanding their pottery school, raising a family and running a studio. A mining company, motivated by high gold prices, began a large open pit gold mining operation just outside of town in 1989. Nevada, encouraging mining, writes its laws to favor that industry's interests over all others. The pit grew ever larger, and the town found its very existence threatened. Spurning buyout offers from the mining company, the Parkses and the other residents decided to stay and fight the near-certain destruction of Tuscarora. As the video chronicles the ongoing saga, we learn much about the Parkses, their school, Dennis' clay work and life in the wide open west.

When the Jarrow Elvis Roadshow are performing at Tyneside's Victoria Park pub, the laughter is always deafening. The regulars call it "knackers' night" - "because they're terrible". The performers, all with varying degrees of physical and mental disabilities, see themselves as serious entertainers and are largely unaware that they are being mocked. The audience finds their incompetence hilarious and the pub makes a lot of money, but some locals are appalled. "These poor unfortunates are up there being mocked and exploited. It shouldn't be allowed." But should they really be protected from doing what they clearly enjoy?

On the Threshold of Liberty

Filmed during an artist residency in New York, 'On the Threshold of Liberty' is a poetic image/word montage deconstructing the relationship between self, language and image. Close-up shots of a woman smoking, a television screen and other scenes are accompanied by an intimate voice over: "Maybe the moment of the split will reproduce itself endlessly. Maybe the moment of the split never existed. Maybe the moment of the split will dissolve into light." Heidi Tikka questions the Freudian notion of the split subject by replacing it with her vision of an endlessly layered, multiple and rhythmic process. On the Threshold of Liberty is greatly philosophical but also explicitly sensual, operating on the affective, rather than cognitive level.

It served as a safe haven for predominantly Black LGBTQ+ youth and fostered a vibrant community where they could fully express themselves. Having A Ball! With the House of Avant Garde offers an immersive and thrilling experience into Chicago’s vibrant Black LGBTQ+ ballroom scene. The documentary showcases footage from the Unity Ball (1991) and the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre Ball (1992), providing a unique and thrilling opportunity for the audience to step into the historical balls hosted by the House of Avant-Garde.

Evident / Evidence

My concept for “Evident / Evidence” was to create a kind of “peep-show”, which involved the construction of a mock Florida shack, into which the spectator is forced to “peep” through a burglar viewer eyepiece INTO the interior dark space. By ringing the doorbell, the viewer ignites a film and a video loop, which project onto a plexiglass screen in the center of the dark space. The loops include images of fragile Florida nature (swamps, birds) and a video intercut of the Hollywood film, the Wizard of Oz, with the Hill-Thomas senate hearings. I was interested here in the making of a woman’s body and experience into spectacle (parallel with the exploitation of the natural environment in Florida) and the positing of evil and blame on her. The specific complications and contrasts of racial and cultural identity embedded in these issues was further developed by the intercutting of the Hollywood film.
