A film-within-a-film exploring the body in motion, frame by frame. Built with four frames within one, half of the screen in motion, the other still, this film makes the viewer feel that they are watching a "moving picture." The sensation one gets is of tension...expectation...shock. It freezes one in a frame. The glorious, trenchant music of R. Murray Schafer in the background further adds to the intense "high" of the film.

An animated opera version of "Goldfish". In this modernised version of the fairy tale of the Goldilocks, everything is absurdly modern - turned upside down. It's the story of a man who lives underwater and a fish who lives above the water in the air and can grant people's wishes. The man catches the fish and starts wanting all sorts of things, but...

The film is based on the impression after reading "la maladie de la mort" by Marguerite Duras, and added to, with other text, pictures and allegories. Through these movies I try to symbolically express the relationship (and lack of understanding) between males and females.

To Joy, completed in 1992, is an imagist film collage set to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. According to Byron, this is his second “musical.” The first of these “musicals” was Les Preludes. Opening scenes in To Joy interchange from gardens of yellow flowers to a revolving carousel to a woman in Asian-inspired attire that is spinning an umbrella. Other scenes include a woman belly dancing, as well as young girls dancing ballet and participating in a maypole dance. Dark, Scenes from the Barn superimposes bucolic barnyard activities with jarring images of hidden desire

"David Rimmer's film is at once a somber and celebratory meditation on time and place. Its title, 'Local Knowledge', is marine terminology for what a skipper must know when navigating dangerous waters. Rimmer is an experienced sailor and the film's spiritual and geographical center is aptly named Storm Bay, where he spends his summers. But it's a troubled site. The camera, moving with tide and swell, seems to strain anxiously at its anchor and it becomes clear from here on in nothing will ever be at rest. Local Knowledge won't save anyone anymore. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2015.

John R. Dilworth's 2nd professional film, this short film was inspired by the romantic comedies of early Woody Allen. Shot on 35mm, it was animated and colored by hand using 'cels'.

X Way Vision is a video of live performances by artists from the Dunedin-based Xpressway record label including The Dead C, Alastair Galbraith, Plagal Grind, Chris Heazlewood & Greg Cairns. Xpressway was a Dunedin-based record label that in the words of it’s founder Bruce Russell provided a ”lifeboat” for a collection of local rock and experimental musicians. Despite being unwanted by other record labels in New Zealand many of the artists on the Xpressway label would later come to be internationally recognised as the defining acts of New Zealand underground music in the 1990s.

This collaborative video shot at a glacial lake in the Rocky Mountains, features a dialogue between two women friends who explore their relationship to the natural environment as influenced by their different cultural backgrounds. Through the layering of meditative images of canoeing, this video evokes a subtle examination of race, gender and privilege: how do we enter into this landscape, as residents, immigrants, tourists, and adventurers?

Tourism is the second-largest industry in the world and the 'touristic encounter' may be the most important contact front today between differing cultures. But such encounters, especially between people of the First and Third worlds, are often characterized by strikingly unequal power relations. This provocative documentary portrays the experience of tourism from the point of view of those who are 'toured,' in this case on the Caribbean island of Barbados. It examines the realities of making a living in a tourist economy, dealing with stereotypical 'ugly Americans,' witnessing one’s traditional culture change under the impact of foreign visitors, and absorbing unceasing government exhortations to 'make a friend for Barbados today.' 'The Toured' will spark thought and discussion in a range of courses in cultural anthropology, Latin American and Caribbean studies, sociology, and popular culture. It was produced by Julie Pritchard Wright.
