"The forest smelled damp, and the sun disappeared behind a cloud. Vitalik put a Quartz camera in my hands. "I'll pretend to be a bird, and you'll take it off sometime." Vitalik lay down on the ground, and I pressed the first lever I saw. Branches cracked somewhere, and a duck quacked loudly in the air. It feels like something has cracked inside me too." - Sergey Kochurov

Backyard Transformations

This exploration in combinatorial media and the morphology of narrative integrates motion picture, sound, and text elements in a story construction environment for children. Introduced through a series of card games that elicit spontaneous, improvisational creation, a collection of fanciful characters, unexpected events, and imaginary viewpoints, fabricated in the storyteller’s own backyard, are shuffled and revealed like a deck of Tarot cards. 174 movie intervals furnish scenes and threads from which children construct and narrate original stories. The project was developed in Los Angeles, CA at Alan Kay’s Apple Computer Vivarium Lab.

Big Stone and Small Night

Big Stone and Small Night

1991 • 12 min • Japan
“I created this film using my favourite motifs and techniques - the surface tension of water, the image of night and time permeating the stone, vertical movement in space, and action cutting to transcend distance. I took my time with it, like bonsai or gardening as a hobby. I repeatedly made and remade it, and there were parts I was still unsure of, but I presented it anyway a year later. That's when the filmmaker Kanai Katsu spotted it. I had an idea based on what he pointed out to me, so I remade that part and the work took its final form. Maybe because I enjoyed making it, I'm fond of this work.” (Isao Kota)

On August 2, 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait prompting a coalition of forces led by the United States to build up in the Gulf region in preparation for conflict with the largest and most battle-hardened Arab army. This programme, produced before the outbreak of the Gulf War in 1991, is the next best thing to a classified Pentagon briefing on the military power of both sides of the then-ensuing conflict. Based on previously classified intelligence reports, it examines what was known of the massive arsenals of the Iraqi armed forces and the multi-national forces based in Saudi Arabia. Major weapons systems on both sides are examined, including previously unseen views of little known Iraqi weapons. America's top experts on Iraq predict the outcome of the battle with uncanny accuracy.
