Vagues à Collioure

Vagues à Collioure

1991 • 6 min • France
In the summer of 1914, Collioure was a small, quiet fishing village, sheltered from the convulsions of a blazing Europe. Matisse painted a curious picture Door-Window in Collioure. Homage to Collioure, nod to the cubists, reference to Matisse; offering to the wind and to the sea. The furious Tramontana sends you in spasms its rumblings in the air which has become crystalline. The sea rages under the effect of the wind, which suddenly desert the various small boats; SOS for the unwary. Large breaking waves delight children on the beach.

Originally working with super 8 animation pieces, Noshioka switches on to video-making from 1991. From time control with frame shooting to gaze fix with live action filming, her technology and texture change greatly. This first work in video indeed straightforwardly defines the relationship between "living space" and "physicality". Through repetition of thundering and quietude, the power of Nishioka's pure solitude and intense observation turn and reshape the warmhearted town of Osaka into something hard and inorganic. The adherence to a suddenly rising unrealistic and gigantic vapor pillar, the ever-turning ventilation fan and the ever-watching eye – All of these are ways to love Osaka permissible only to this filmmaker.

In This Nervous Thing, Santos questions the ways we perceive and receive information through the media. Santos writes, "Lost in our creations, we must use artificial means, such as newspapers and other media to simulate knowledge of what is around us. In doing so, we create heroes, cities, characters, icons and monuments. The result is "this nervous thing, this image that doesn't stop, this quick dialogue, this dynamic and superficial reading of the essence of the human being." Sand and Sea

Liu Zeyuan is a farmer on the edge of the desert at the junction of Inner Mongolia and Ningxia. He grows food and raises camels, and his family's annual income is 5,000 yuan. Liu Picheng is a fisherman on Jingwa Island, part of the isolated Liaodong Peninsula; he is unwilling to attract attention and becomes hostile to the camera. The living environment and conditions of these two families are different, but the directors try to find some common ground while expressing the two respective unique lifestyles. In fact, these lives are firmly swayed by nature: sand storms can destroy everything, just as the ocean tide can destroy everything, and for the two protagonists, the difficult grasp of the future and their children also brings them the same loneliness. Filmed in 1989, Sand and Sea received the Grand Prix award from the 1991 Asian Broadcasting and Television Union.
