Schpergsche Lichtmess - ein Männerfest

Schpergsche Lichtmess - ein Männerfest

1990 • 20 min • East Germany, Germany
The Candlemas Festival in Spergau in the district of Halle, one of the few examples of a traditional custom that is still largely true to the original. Archival footage from 1925 allows a comparison with current footage of the festivities. In interviews, participants talk about the significance of this custom. The colorful costume of the Candlemas runner consists of many colorful ribbons and floral decorations, which are intended to represent the reawakening of life and spring. The runner, together with other costumed figures such as the singer, trader, peep-box man, kitchen boy, sausage stick bearer, registrar, pritcher, black maker, egg woman, the pea (straw) bear, bear leader, horses and soldiers, parade through the streets from house to house, delighting the locals. The crowning glory of this Candlemas celebration, which takes place every 1st Sunday in February, is a fun party in the marquee with music and dancing.

Symmetry

Symmetry

1990 • 11 min
Symmetry was a film I made in 1990 at that time I wanted to experiment more with narrative elements in my films. Looking back on this film I see Ernie Steeles, O.K. Hotel, Virginia Inn, The Viaduct and James Carbo’s eastlake silver house all gone now. This film is different from the films I made before .. and the films I have made after. I was grateful to Pony Mourice for agreeing to be in this picture, if it wasn't for her the film never would have been made because she was the only one I could picture in my mind to be in my film.

Les bruits blancs

Les bruits blancs

1990 • 16 min • France
The term "white noise" describes the technical application of a certain quality of background noise obtained by emitting constant energy to different sound frequencies. This effectively "cancels out" the frequencies and the equivalent of "silence" is produced. Les Bruits blancs centres on a dual polarity: the Parisian periphery - the perimiter boulevard of Paris - its urban landscape, and the flux of a water current - the St. Laurent seaway which circles Montreal.

Trou de Fer

Trou de Fer

For canyoning enthusiasts, the Trou de Fer on Reunion Island is a must-see, and not just for the faint-hearted. The first complete descent of the canyon, with a 1,000-meter drop, was made by Thierry Krattinger, Stéphane Girard, and Jean-Claude Dobrilla in 1990. Filming took place in very difficult conditions: an aquatic atmosphere, a dramatic void, and mediocre rock in the 300-meter waterfall. The documentary Trou de Fer was selected for competition at the Trento Film Festival in 1992.
