La Queue Tigrée D'un Chat Comme Un Pendentif de Pare-Brise

Difficult to say what this film is about. I know it is the product of much anger. Anger against TV, the media, cinema, politics, social, economy, history, finally a lot. Above all I wanted to stop making illusions.

Glances

Glances

A minimalist epic – a theme and variations on a single brushstroke, with a great deal more discovered from it than one would have thought possible. Though we never learn the identity of the film's protagonist it develops a definite character and personality – sometimes mercurial, sometimes determined – which makes it as endearing as the human characters in many other films.

Warsaw 88-89

Warsaw 88-89

1989 • 28 min • Poland
In the film Warsaw 88-89 we observe the city on the eve of the coming changes, captured on VHS tape. Tomasz Dominik and Piotr Rozbicki capture interesting, distinctive details - an unusual balcony, inscriptions on the walls, beautiful but dilapidated architectural details - from the gray reality of shabby tenement houses, blocks of flats, squalid courtyards. In the background we can observe the political, economic and cultural context of the period: lifestyle, cars, clothes, texts on walls. In the public space the sphere of the sacred mixes with the profane.

It seems that pure love is a very painful thing these days. Yoshio is lured into a dubious club by Keiko, whom he falls in love with at first sight on campus. His premonition is correct, the club is a prostitution ring and Keiko is the number one girl there. Yoshio is confronted by one fierce opponent after another. It's easy to like a hero who gets beaten up and then gets back up again. It is worth mentioning that the action scenes are very powerful and full of stunts.

The world of the kappa lives in the water. There they live in a mousy apartment block, surrounded by mousy walls and looking up at a mousy sky. The expression on the back of the Kappa's face is very similar to that of a middle-aged businessman. Eventually, the final war comes to the lives of the peaceful, smiling Kappa. Mass slaughter, spurts of purple blood, and mountains of corpses. But whether this is in the past or the future is never mentioned. A Kappa desperately pedals his bicycle, but where will he end up? A unique animation that captures war as an idea and the Japanese people as an idea.

Early Summer in 1989

Early Summer in 1989

1989 • 33 min • Japan, India
A sketch of the first summer of the first year of the Heisei era, with episodes surrounding a university student. The film unfolds in a gentle rhythm of independent episodes, such as his interactions with his friends over compulsory reports and job-hunting activities, the beautiful young man he is interested in for some reason, and a visit from his sister. In addition, by placing the characters in the distance, the surrounding space is incorporated into the picture, and the freshness characteristic of early summer is expressed in a natural way. In combination with the unusual character of the protagonist, Sabu, the film depicts his "uneventful" daily life in an unhurried manner, and it is a strange work that draws the viewer in.
More Than Friends, Less Than Loves

The protagonist, Ryoji, wavers between several girlfriends while maintaining a delicate relationship between "more than a friend, less than a lover". Their youth is in full bloom. In Montreuil sous Bois, in the Paris suburbs, Georges Méliès set up the world's first film studio in 1896. He built a second one in 1905. He shot more than 500 films there until 1913. In 1904, Charles Pathé built a studio a few hundred meters from there, which completed the installations in Vincennes; in 1909, he sold it to the famous producer Zecca. Later, Max Linder also came to work at the Montreuil studio. In 1920, Pathé gave up film production and sold his studio to Russian exiled filmmakers: Ermolieff, then to Alexandre Kamenka. They were among the most active producers of the 1920s. With great actors like Mosjoukine and a remarkable technical team, Kamenka was to launch such important filmmakers as Volkoff, René Clair, Jean Epstein, Jacques Feyder and Marcel L'Herbier.
