Kyiv, 1989. A demonstration dedicated to the anniversary of the Chornobyl tragedy is happening at the “Dynamo” stadium – all the seats are filled, the words “Chornobyl, Prypiat, a warning” are visible on the scoreboard. People took to the streets in search of truth because years after the tragedy, there was still no comprehension or public awareness of the real dangers of radiation, and a general feeling that no one from the government had been punished for the accident or for carrying on with the 1st of May demonstration held in Kyiv in the first days of the tragedy.

A Gentle Afternoon Nap

A Gentle Afternoon Nap

A work filmed in a room at the Washington Square Hotel in New York, created with the technique of multiple exposure. Scenes of a nude couple are overlaid with images of natural phenomena, such as blooming flowers and clouds in the sky. “The scenes of the man and woman were in filmed in the hotel room where they were staying in New York. The summer sky and clouds were shot time-lapse on the roof of a building in Nakano-ku, Tokyo, where I lived at the time. I can’t remember where the cherry blossoms were filmed, but I remember I only saw the petals on the ground rather than the flowers themselves. Three motifs taken at different locations: the activities of men and women, the hot sunshine every summer, and the cherry blossoms that bloom and fall in spring. Things that are fleeting and disappearing, but at the same time, only exist at that moment.“

Ruppiner Schweiz - Am Ende eines Sommers

Ruppiner Schweiz - Am Ende eines Sommers

1989 • 29 min • East Germany
North of Neuruppin lies the Ruppiner Schweiz, the smallest “Swiss” area on German soil. Fontane loved the seclusion and enigmatic appeal of this region’s landscape. As an idyllic recreational and holiday region, it attracts countless tourists every year. But the industry has left its mark: what were previously common sights in the wild can only now be found by vacationers in museums or small zoos. A film about a regional landscape, its history, and how people treat it.

Felder 9.6

Felder 9.6

1989 • 10 min
In contrast to Hochhaus, with Felder 9.6 I wanted to realize a creative solution in the smallest of spaces, and at the same time exercise complete control over the development process. For this purpose I first looked for a suitable motif; it should be devoid of emotional or physical meaning and should not represent any function or idea. But it should very well already have a process-like dynamic, which I then wanted to take up with my design and, so to speak, 'transform'. I made a wooden light box with a glass surface; I mounted a red light underneath and a graph paper template on the glass with precise graphic instructions for the positions of the filmstrip on the photostrip. I had calculated that I could move the 16mm film 12 times across the width of the 35mm format, each time shifting the optical soundtrack by 3mm.

Sodom By the Sea

Sodom By the Sea

1989 • 17 min
"Sodom By the Sea is a 17 minute experimental documentary about immigration to the United States. It uses the historic site of Coney Island as a point of departure from which to explore both the hopes and failed dreams of those who left their native lands to start a new life in America. Optically printed images of contemporary Coney Island are juxtaposed against the voices of immigrants describing their varied yet shared experiences. Intertitles serve to stitch together two parallel themes: that the heyday of Coney Island and the heyday of immigration to America occurred simultaneously, and that the two had both a subtle and lasting impact on each other." - Mary Patierno

New Zealand Rally 1989

1989 • 50 min
The entry for the 1989 New Zealand Rally, round 7 of the World rally series was a little thin with the absence of the major factory teams, Lancia and Toyota. But this did not detract in any way of what turned out to be an action-packed and eventful rally held mostly on spectacular gravel stages. As usual Videovision were there to capture the action set in some of the finest and scenic pictures of the year on the rally calendar. The Sierra Cosworths were making their debut at this venue. Driven by British Open Champion Jimmy McRae and son Colin –the latter proved to be a sensation in his first Group A world championship rally, the 2-wheel drive Cosworths were spectacular especially on the gravel and this was sure to make life exciting for the McRaes. The British were certainly in force with Malcolm Wilson driving a 2WD Vauxhall Astra GTE who gave the British something to cheer about with a superb performance.
