Moving documentary looks back on the remarkable life of John Fitzgerald Kennedy and combines the tragedy of his untimely death with the rememberances of those who knew him best and those who knew him not at all. James Earl Jones reviews the brief life of JFK. His triumphs. His failures. His inpiration and contribution to our history. The story is told through previously unseen and rare video and home movies. and by many people who were there, ordinary people. The story is built around the exclusive historic videotape from WFAA, the dallas station whose studios are located so near the infamouse "grassy knoll" where the President was shot. We see the events as they happened, from JFK's arrival in Dallas to his funeral in Washington four days later.

The work of throwing the vector of one's own emotions into the heart of another person, and the work of "surveying" a disorderly land, maybe infinitely similar. Yamanaka, an aspiring novelist, moves into the lodgings of his friend Nagai. Nagai's younger sister, Yae, also comes to Tokyo, and the three of them have three different vectors to throw. However, through the making of Yae's video, they gradually come to understand each other's feelings. The director's skill is excellent, making the most of the characters by placing them in the right places. Through trivial everyday events, the film portrays three people who have been unable to communicate with each other coming to terms.

A Call to Arms

A Call to Arms

1989 • 22 min
A woman dressed in armour sleeps on the floor of a dark, sunlit room. As she sleeps dreams and memoires unravel in her head. In the final light of day she wakes herself and prepares for ‘battle’… A Call to Arms is an allegory of the emotional and practical struggles of the artist. It also aims to overcome this turmoil with a new mythopoetic legend, differing in purpose and conclusion from those traditionally offered. It pillages a number of tales and images of conflict which form part of our collective memory, and challenges these by placing women as central and powerful figures. Pageantry, flourishing banners and other emblems of war persist but an unusual serenity and poise underlies these suggestions of aggression and battle.

Marina Abramovic collaborated with videomaker Charles Atlas on this striking work of autobiographical performance. Abramovic delivers a monologue that traces a concise personal chronology. This brief narrative history, which references her past in the former Yugoslavia, her performance work, and her collaboration with and separation from Ulay, is intercut with images of Abramovic engaged in symbolic gestures and ritual acts—scrubbing her feet, staring like Medusa as snakes writhe on her head. Closing her litany with the phrase "time past, time present," Abramovic invokes the personal and the mythological in a poignant affirmation of self.
