Tr'Cheot'My P'sy

Tr'Cheot'My P'sy

1988 • 3 min
Tr'Cheot'My P'y is a hiccuping audio news segment to which footage from many sources is loosely choreographed. The film is intended as a portrait of the body and embodiment, systems of information and representations of the body itself.

Camcorder Atrocity

Various Evil Dead (and possibly Napalm Death) inspired lowjinks, starting with early turntablism experiments and classic lines such as "whether you like it or not I'm an anarchist", early primitive gore effects, an abandoned film which may be really famous who knows, even one kid on the news slagging off politicians, and for the climax ye olde melting polystyrene head trick. Oh, and skateboarding.

"Shot in northern Alberta, where the artist grew up, the film consists of ten long-take shots of various lengths divided by black leader bearing a number for each successive shot... notes in origin realizes the subtle lyricism that appears in the last image of its predecessor. Here Epp intimates a mysteriously shared and personal complicity of artist and viewer without, however, abandoning that purity and extraordinary elegance that mark Epp as one of the most accomplished of film artist." - Bart Testa, Art Gallery of Ontario catalogue

Brooding Angels

Brooding Angels

1988 • 6 min • United States of America
From its fiery outset, Brooding Angles is decidedly gothic and the mood anxious. It is a dark rumination on the specter of authority, resistance and paranoia marking the close of Reagan's second term in office. Born in 1945, Auder came of age during the 1960s, a decade as tumultuous in France as it was in the United States. The decade culminated in the student/worker strikes of May 1968 that shut down the city of Paris. Auder's value system was in many respects shaped by this anti-authoritarian milieu. Its remnants are to be found in his preponderance with issues violence and conflict as they serve to question moral progress. The soundtrack's ominous melody is recycled from footage of cellist David Soyer that can be seen in A Portrait of Alice Neel.

Stief

Stief

1988 • 12 min
STIEF is abstractly interested in the energy of color, using flowers and groups of arranged objects as pro-film material. The artifice of certain compositions of images is opposed to the botanical naturalism of other compositions, and makes the tension between the different compositional and photographic approaches becomes a new challenge. The film includes several chapters or stanzas that differ in their rhythms, dominant colors and emotions.

Faded Wallpaper

Faded Wallpaper

1988 • 20 min
Based loosely on the short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, ‘Faded Wallpaper’ is concerned with visual perception, madness and the search for identity. A woman, isolated within a room, becomes obsessed with the wallpaper surrounding her, seeing within its faded patterns strange images – at times pleasurable and seductive, at times threatening and dangerous. As these images become more insistent she begins to strip the wallpaper away in an attempt either to banish the images or get to their source. Words and sounds run through her head as she peels away the layers, questioning her own self-image, her imagination and her sanity. No solutions are given, only more questions… T.K.

Cricket

Cricket

1988 • 7 min
“Cricket refers to mass communication, which bridges the gap between residents in different cities separated by geography and culture. This video also reveals how appearances can deceive, for a sense of individualism is born out of harmonious unity. Like crickets, it takes shape, gently splitting and singing at first and ultimately subsuming the entire body to bring a person to madness and schizophrenia. The video images are reconstructed montages of performances that have been reassembled in chronological order. The conclusion appears sinister; but, what is worse, a detached mass person, all parts behaving as one, or a personality scourged by individual desires?” – Marikki Hakola
