Swimmer

Swimmer

A beautiful photographic quality characterised Maziere’s Swimmer which used freeze frame and repeat shots of a swimmer in what could only be the Mediterranean Sea and light. With a fractured ‘found’ soundtrack, what it lacked in depth (and this may be due to its ‘series’ nature) it made up in its surface tension.

An allegorical film that takes place in a utopian society which has faced the prospect that complete annihilation is an ever present possibility. Cork, an innocent bird-like creature, in a militaristic world that is dominated by high fasion and flashy billboards is befriended by the not too trustworthy bad boy named Vouku. Vouku’s tendency toward violent entertainment and vehicular homicide only serve to increase Cork’s angst. After a trip to the game their attitudes are changed by a vision of angels dancing at a ho-down on the head of a needle.

“Specially created for the Rencontre Danse / Image in Chateauvallon, this film is the result of the encounter, confrontation and then the almost miraculous match between the light and violent camera of Téo HERNANDEZ and the dancer-choreographer Bernardo Montet in the midst of improvisation. A body between sea and sky, the silent presence of the wind, a few birds: the elements of a fundamental mythology transformed into lyrical abstraction.”

Well Known Stranger: Howard Finster's Workout

1987 • 28 min
Well Known Stranger: Howard Finster's Workout is a film about legendary folk artist Howard Finster of Summerville, northwest Georgia. At the age of 60, after forty years as a Baptist preacher and "small motor repairman", Finster heeded the call to "paint sacred art". In a tour-de-force of self styled "talking art", Finster describes the prophetic dreams, spiritual inspirations and visionary experiences that led him to become a painter. His work was selected in 1984 to represent the United States in the prestigious Venice Biennale

"Gretchen Bender’s Total Recall (1987) is the artist’s largest realized work of electronic theater, an eleven-channel performance choreographed across 24 television monitors and three projection screens ... Bender mined the mesmerizing, banal imagery of mainstream media, television, and movies, edited together in a barrage of quick cuts, allowing the subliminal meaning of the images to surface in the mind of the viewer as their eyes move from screen to screen. Set against an abrasive score by composer Stuart Argabright, the piece creates a jarring experience that mimics the immersive, yet assaulting image-world from which Bender felt her viewers were increasingly unable to disentangle themselves." - Red Bull Arts

The everyday life of the candy factory. A gray, exhausting life, and a guest lecturer talks about beautiful feelings, about love and courtship. He does not know what it costs to make a box of chocolates that someone will bring to his beloved woman on March 8. It's snowing, covering the streets. Then spring will come, then summer, but still in the smoking room, the workers of the candy factory, in rare moments of rest, will talk about their lives, which are passing.

This short impression was made from the film footage which had not been used in the film ‘Hommage à Beksiński’ screened at the Film Festival in Cannes in 1986 and is a product of one artist’s fascination with another artist, outstanding painter Zdzisław Beksiński. It is an attempt to add extra meaning to well-known works by Beksiński using the means of expressions applied in the film. The challenge for the viewer is to discover references.

This film is a series of shot or found sequences (about, of cities that I frequent) which, in the editing, display a fluidity and continuity eluding narration. The sequences are shaped by the editing according to various arrangements which respect the film possible direction: passage from one place to another, from one moment to another. To pass, bridging one point to another, is to transform oneself, become other. The film employs certain leitmotivs which relauch the flow and facilitate diverse transformations of scattered sensations. This film, although renewing lyricism, does not deny formalism which it uses in another manner, while taking into account the meaning/possible meanings produced through linking images and their evocative passage.
