Hello, Berlin!

1987 • 12 min • East Germany, Germany
A short film which utilizes found promotional footage of socialist Berlin juxtaposed with footage of an aggressive first date. In the film, Werner used colour footage of an ethereal socialist Berlin as a form of sarcasm which meshes with the imperfect first date; the sarcasm deriving from Eastern Germany’s contentious and fraying relationship with socialism.
Ballad for a Kaiser Carabela

Ballad for a Kaiser Carabela

1987 • 20 min • Argentina
The story develops into a lonely town in the middle of the desert, where the only person awake, a man in a suit, is always trying to start a car, but he never can. One day, after walking throught the desert for a long time, a woman and a kid end up in this town. The man in a suit offers them to stay the night. The days go by, and they almost don't trade any words between them. The town is always empty, but functioning. They just pass the nights and days inside, dancing without music, playing videogames or walking on the street, under the neon lights of empty shops, making calls without any answer.. The title (Ballad for a Kaiser Carabela) refers to the first family car manufactured in series in Argentina.
Resurrection

Resurrection

1987 • 6 min • Brazil
A montage of photographs (from police archives and newspapers) of tortured and murdered victims from the slums of Rio de Janeiro. The strange positions of the slaughtered bodies give a critical meaning to two traditional religious hymns that sing praise to the glory of God and the Virgin Mary. The strange postures of the mutilated bodies establish an ironical meaning to the traditional verses, while the voices of singers Agnaldo Timóteo and Ângela Maria add a pathos of deliriously popular, in an atmosphere of joy and triumph of the Virgin Mary. Film-shock. Basically an investigation about the force of gravity upon dead bodies. A small hymn of love to the mannerist art of sixteenth century.

Brave Fire S09

Brave Fire S09

1987 • 6 min • Japan
This work was submitted in a special animation competition as part of a PR project for a power company, but was unfortunately not adopted. The reason is very clear: the setting of the story is the exhausted earth. There couldn't be a more instructive setting for a power company that uses enormous amounts of the earth's resources. Additionally, a girl robot discovered by the main character can store sunlight and convert it into energy; in other words, the robot does not require a power-generating company. In addition to this, the robot destroys herself to protect the established solar power generation system in space. The unsuccessful outcome of the competition for Tezuka Osamu was only natural, and it is clear that he created this piece, as it was intentionally, as he managed everything from the original story to the screenplay, animation, narration, etc., all the while knowing that the competition was sponsored by a power company.

"The Ballad of the Wood" reveals the traditional architecture of the houses of the Western Black Sea region for centuries has been passed down from father to son, from master to apprentice through secrets and a technique known as "canti". Some of the houses shown have been standing for the last 100 to 150 years. The film honors the great craftsman of the past who utilized the "dizeme" technique through an emphasis on structures that are 300 years old. These examples are some of the most unique to be found in the Western Black Sea region. This craft has been passed down from generation to generation.
