Cityaniscape

This black and white artistic travelogue pokes and probes the city of Calgary through the eyes of four very different cinematographers. Each looks at a particular and unique area to contribute to an overall sense of the city's texture. The four sections are creatively connected through poetic narrative and accompanying images of transportation, which stress the relationship between working and living in the city.

Indoctrination

This film is about a five-day seminar designed to teach executives how to "sell themselves" better. This course, designed for managers, teaches the basic rules of dialectics and rhetoric and provides training in body language, gesture and facial expression. The aim of selling something has always been a principle of mercantile action. Yet it was only through the marriage of psychology and modern capitalism that the idea of selling oneself was perfected.

Plutonium Blonde

Plutonium Blonde is a beautifully textured collage of sound and images and a fractured narrative about woman’s self-definition and control. Taking the figure of Thelma, a woman working with the plutonium monitors at the core of a reactor, Lahire questions both the process at the core of the plutonium terminal and that one that constructs female identity. Plutonium Blonde is part of a trilogy of films on radiation (the other two are Uranium Hex and Serpent River) that Lahire made in the 1980s.

A man makes soup with mayonnaise and dolls. McCarthy: "I was given access to a community television studio for two days of shooting and one day of editing. I had been given the grant based on a proposal to do a video tape on child abuse. I taped for one day alone and one day with Mike Kelley. I asked Mike Kelley to be the son and I would be the father. There was no written script. After taping for two days, I edited the tapes, making two separate tapes: Family Tyranny and Cultural Soup. They are often shown together."

Parfait d'amour

If the hands had eyes during the act of love, if the whole body could see. This is what the video simulates. It was filmed with an endoscope, the optical system with which you can go directly on and into the body. Due to technical conditions (light intensity, etc.), it was shot on 16mm film. The trick editing was done on high-tape with a special effects generator. The story is told by a sailor whose sea wife always wants to hear the story again, when she is in his arms.

MosaÏc

MOSAÏC is a collage film using a Super 8 roll that was probably exposed manually, with pretty much failed results, which I reused as a base for collage. To do this, I unspooled the whole roll in order to have a rectangular working base, onto which I applied Super 8 emulsion from another film, in a crosswise fashion, going from strip to strip diagonally and horizontally. The visual effect is totally abstract and resembles a mosaic, with its many little triangular forms.
