The Ascent of Man

The Ascent of Man

1987 • 24 min
“The Ascent of Man..” Parts I, II, & III videotapes focus on the human psyche, its possible primordial essence and subsequent deviations thereof. This is expressed through the use of archetypal/stereotypical representations delivered by broadcast television (illustrating ‘mans’ interrelationship to ‘man’, nature & technology) juxtaposed with references to present a world view of scientific materialism’s analytical experiments and propagation of a standard social order. An order devised from the overwhelming and problematic intentionality enforced by the ontologically debased media industry predominate in our time.

Each figure sees a fish – supposedly the protagonists’ dinner – circling in space. Inside the biscuit, a hardworking ant works for a 'crust’ to feed his family.

Writes Kuchar: "It's New York in the summer and I set out to track down some high school friends who have burrowed deep into the 'big apple.' The viewer gets to see how far they've eaten their way to the core in this 45-minute study of urban denizens in the grip of Newtonian damnation." Here, Kuchar visits his mother in the Bronx, chats and eats with old friends in their claustrophobic New York apartments, and muses about friendship, growing older, and a time when the "streets of New York were cleaner, and so was I."

Made as one of a four part series exploring different aspects of women and the law, on which all the women animators involved researched and worked as a group, before then making individual films, each quite different in content, tone and style. Based on the real life experiences of Josie O Dwyer, the film uses her voice as commentary, taken from hours of taped conversation with the filmmaker. Different styles of drawing convey her emotions and the devastating effects detention and imprisonment have on young girls put away 'for their own protection'.
