Silent as a Fish

Silent as a Fish

1987 • 36 min • Belgium
From pond to plate, we are shown the journey and destiny of one carp among many. This particular carp will be eaten stuffed during a family meal. Carp stuffed (in the Polish fashion), also called in yiddish (Gefilte Fish) is a traditional dish eaten by Ashkenazi Jews. It is cooked, sweetened and served as a cold dish at the start of the meal. The head is reserved for the head of the family. The film, set in Brussels, on the day of the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah), aims to show the culinary preparation together with the accompanying prayers and ritual. It focuses particularly on the sacrifice of the fish and on the issue of mass extermination.

From Nevis To... is a seven-minute docu-drama that deals with Juliet Jones, a new arrival to Canada. From her arrival to the airport to her ride to the hotel room, many thoughts about her past, present and her future surround her. She tells of what her life was like in Nevis her home country, what she heard about her new country, and the family and lifestyle that she leaves behind. We hear her thoughts in voice over and we see her coming up against and interacting with her new environment, which bears little resemblance to her former home. A Fairytale Sits On The Doorstep

A Fairytale Sits On The Doorstep

1987 • 9 min • Soviet Union
A wistful little “story-spirit” rides the wind to a child’s doorstep and invites her on a whistle-stop tour through the Latvian seasons. Guided by a gentle water sprite, they drift from spring showers and blue-flower meadows to roaring Midsummer bonfires, stormy autumn seas, and snow-bright winter nights. The imagery—pastel cut-out shapes that melt and reform—visualises verses by the poet Aspazija, while Zigmars Liepiņš’s folk-inflected score (sung by Mirdza Zīvere) turns the whole trip into a lullaby on loop: every tale enchants for a moment, then must move on to the next open doorway. In the end the child waves goodbye, knowing the fairy-tale will return whenever imagination cracks the door again.

The morning after. The landscape, the environment, leftovers from breakfast, the man. Bruckner´s pathos - all of that upon a rough surface. A woman´s voice says: "ohh - ob - O.B. - ob er..? - Ober - Oberflächen! - Oberfächen-Kontakt... ("Ohh - if - O.B. - if he..? supreme - surfaces! - superficial contact.."), after having previously spelled out the letters, O.B.E.R.F.L.Ä.C.H.E.N. The original material consisted of a S-8 film. It was projected onto the palm of my hand and refilmed with a 16mm camera. The hand is being closed at the end of the film - it opens again at the words "Oberflächen-Kontakt" (superficial contact); frames of film fall out. The surfaces have touched one another but the contact has been superficial. Film on the palm, the touch of an image. To place something in your hand, to feel it, to handle it. The result is part of the whole - single images, splinters of film and thought. O.k., that is the way it is. (Moucle Blackout)
