Windham Hill: China

Windham Hill: China

1987 • 55 min • United States of America
The opening of China to the West has produced images that focus on the more obvious: the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the tombs of Sian. But there is another much larger part of China which we have not seen. It's the China of people, its rhythms, its patterns, its colors. This video brings us to the large and timeless world of life in China, as it is lived now and has been for centuries - vast, unchanging, and slightly mysterious. Here is but a glimpse of this other world. This dreamvideo was filmed during the months of October and November of 1986 in and around the following cities and locations: Beijing, Chengdu, Guiyang, Guilin, Yangshuo, Xingping, Yangai, Nanjing, Huangshan Mountain and Hefei.

In this work, the Lumière-like technique of photographic reproduction of reality is combined with the animation-like technique of photographing each frame while shifting it to make non-moving objects look like they are moving. However, if there is a slight difference from what we normally think of animation, it is that the person being animated is a human being who can move by himself.

A Perfect Pair

A Perfect Pair

1987 • 14 min
A Perfect Pair posits the idea that individual consumers are walking billboards for the products they use; product slogans and brand names peeking out from every crevice and cranny of the actors’ bodies. Export demonstrates how the body of the consumer, especially that of the female consumer, is co-opted by commercialism. In tongue-in-cheek fashion, A Perfect Pair celebrates the modern-day co-mingling of fetish objects, as a body builder seduces a prostitute at a bar saying, “Your eyes are the most beautiful blue ad-space. Your cheek could promote a Mercedes. Your neck could be a slogan for styled technology.” Export’s work is centered around the evolving role of women in a culture where images increasingly displace material reality. A Perfect Pair wonderfully illustrates the inescapability of advertising’s “regime of signs", the signifying network of personal and product values that is effectively encoded on the space of women’s bodies.

The comings and goings of the late underground filmmaker, Curt McDowell—and the people and activities that came and went along with him—are the themes that run through this existential diary of daily life. McDowell was dying from AIDS-related illnesses during the production of the diary. “An elegy for McDowell, the videowork captures Kuchar’s mournful remembrances of his long-lasting friendship with the young filmmaker. But it also has the inquisitive charm, perverse humor, and quirky candor that places Kuchar’s visual expressions in a gritty niche all their own.”

I Love You

I Love You

1987 • 5 min • Japan
“Double Portrait” and “I Love You” are a paired piece with Akiko Iimura. Both Iimuras play individually as well as a unit. In “Double Portrait” they are never together, but one by one in three points of view, front, side, and back, assigned to the words “I”, “You” and “He/She” respectively. The pronouns rotate with every repetition, for instance, in front view with “You”, then “He/She” and back to “I”. Often the words are destroyed acoustically making them unintelligible. “I Love You” is not a style of confession, but the words, and a linguistic practice using a sentence and shifting the pronouns.
