What if Willis O'Brien made a stop-motion short subject based on Mary Shelly's novel Frankenstein? This animated short, shot on 8mm by Tom Triman, won an award and got mentioned in the final issue of Cinemagic Magazine in 1987 (issue 37). He was a writer for such magazines as Scary Monsters. He also made a stop-motion gangster drama inspired by those Warner Bros. gangster films called You Dirty Rat (1982).

Video excerpts from the homonymous video-installation produced in September ’86 for the “Arte degli Ambienti” Festival in Pantelleria. Later it was staged also in Firenze (October ’86), Perugia (April ’87) and finally in Palermo (June ’87, part of the collective exhibition “Per amor del Cielo” at the Modern Art Gallery). The installation is an ever-changing landscape of memories dedicated: “…to the black island, where a beloved shipwrecked friend, after having suffered for a long time has been turned into a fish”. The theme of the work is the shipwreck in all of its allegorical meanings. Mixing music, electronic images, voices, scenographic materials, GMM re-proposes the poetic reconstruction of a seascape populated by fishermen, castaways, wrecks, hallucinated backgrounds.

Two drivers were still capable of securing the World Rally Drivers’ Championship as the 1986 series was wound up in the United States of America. Juha Kankkunen (Peugeot) and Markku Alen (Lancia) battled it out through the forests of Washington State with scarcely a thought that the issue would really be decided by an FISA court later in the month. That situation was reached after Peugeot protested against their exclusion from the San Remo event in Italy, which significantly affected the points score. However, as the cameras show to great advantage, the action on the Olympus Rally was fast and furious, with local star John Buffum going really well in a semi-official works Audi Quattro and providing substantial opposition to the big two. But all eyes were on the Flying Finns as they ignored the political wrangles and got on with the driving. Hurtling along the smooth wooded straights and screaming round the curves, the French and Italian manufacturers top men tried all they knew.

Round 6 of the 1986 World Rally Championship and once again the Acropolis Rally proved to be one of the toughest events of the season. There was plenty of slipping and sliding on the loose gravel stages, plenty of punctures and out of the 101 starters, only 34 cars were to finish. Tough indeed - and that was without the battle that ensued at the top of the The event was billed as a three way battle between the big guns of Peugeot, Ford and Lancia (Audi had withdrawn from the series after the recent tragedies). With top drivers Stig Blomqvist (Ford RS200), Juha Kankkunen (Peugeot) and Markku Alen (Lancia) all leading on the road at some point during the event - the outcome was unpredictable!

Henri Toivonen, still fired up from his win in the opening round at Monte Carlo was confident he could maintain his early lead in the very fast Lancia Martini. Stiff competition was expected from Ford who used this Swedish round to debut the new RS200 and with Juha Kankkunen in his Peugeot ready to show a clean pair of heels - this is rallying at its slipping, sliding best. Strong challenges from Eriksson’s Golf GTi Audi, Mazda, Rover and Citroen were expected. Would Toivonen triumph, or was there a surprise in store?

NEW ZEALAND The young Juha Kankkunen - series leader - came to New Zealand full of confidence. The Peugeot driver’s main rival Markku Alen (Lancia Delta S4) was determined not to let the French opposition retain the World Manufacturers’ Championship without a fight. And a fight it was! ARGENTINA The Championship had reached fever pitch by the Argentinian round. Both Lancia and Peugeot were desperately trying to recruit experienced drivers to boost their chances. Peugeot managed to secure the services of a certain Stig Blomqvist - and by the end of the rally the team had cause to thank him. His crucial third place had saved the day for Peugeot even though it was Lancia’s rising star Miki Biasion who had finally taken his first major win. With Kankkunen sidelined by mechanical problems, Alen’s second place closed the points gap in the Championship race and the rallying world looked forward to the next battle - the 1000 Lakes!

The Italian Lancia and the French Peugeot teams came to the renowned 1000 Lakes Rally hotly disputing the manufacturers' title, with Markku Alen matched against Timo Salonen. Peugeot, however, had another ace in the pack in the shape of 27 year-old rising local star Juha Kankkunen, who was looking extremely good for the drivers' championship. This video captures in enthralling fashion the red-hot battle through the Finnish forests, with their huge ‘yumps’ and flat-out straights. Always a rally to set the pulses racing, Alen had the Lancia Delta running at its best and his ability to control the S4 at seemingly impossible speeds and angles will amaze the viewer. Supporting him would be Kalle Grundel, specially released from his Ford RS200 commitments and pushing hard on his home territory. Again though, Peugeot were taking no chances by fielding the experienced Stig Blomqvist, also no stranger to the 1000 Lakes.
