Hitchhike Break

Hitchhike Break

1984 • 9 min • Japan
On a country road, a car catches sight of a man standing on the side of the road. The man gives a signal to the car. But the car passes by. Using a large number of still photographs, this experimental animation shows the hitchhiker's inability to wait for a car. A dizzying amount of work has gone into this 9-minute film.

Fountain of no Water

1984 • 14 min • Japan
A young girl dressed in white rolls runs and eats watermelons with abandon. The camera follows the girl's gestures incessantly. Occasional inserts such as a red umbrella, a necklace or three men pulling down their trousers, give the film a unique image of a female artist and the heroine's vibrant body. Yuko Ishimaru, who plays the leading role, is an indispensable figure in Hokkaido's independent film scene.

1984 • 8 min • Canada
A Chaplinesque mime goes through the pixilated motions of his workaday existence. Functioning inside a black frame that manipulates him and restricts him to his daily routine, he struggles to free himself. Through an act of creative energy, he stands his life on end and starts anew. A wonderfully fresh and freewheeling film that tells a serious story lightly.

4 Œuvres "Télidon"

1984 • 11 min
Made with Telidon, a Canadian videotex system that was in use in the 1980s. Although its primary function was to transmit textual and illustrative information, this system has been used by a number of Canadian artists as a creative tool to make graphic or video work. These films possess the rudimentary and primitive charm of the beginnings of the digital image era. [arcSea, spirale, inTO, TO]

Andrés from La Victoria

1984 • 50 min • Chile
During a protest, French priest André Jarlan was shot and killed on September 4, 1984, in the La Victoria neighborhood of Santiago. The residents arrived on foot to the Cathedral demanding justice, also offering a testimony of love and solidarity with their pastor. In parallel, the documentary tells the story of the 1957 occupation that gave rise to the town. It also reveals the strong organization of the residents, essential in addressing the economic hardship and repression suffered by one of the main popular bastions of opposition to the military dictatorship. Pierre Dubois, the parish priest of La Victoria, played a leading role in the attempt to stop the violence against the residents of the town. In recognition of his work, he was granted Chilean nationality in 2001.
