‘Who needs a pregnant waitress?’ is just one of the questions that fills Ellie Connolly’s mind when she discovers she is pregnant in 1980s Ireland. Statistic was made by film student Alison Kelly in 1983, the year which saw the passing of the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution Act (which effectively criminalised abortion in most circumstances).  Ellie (Edel McCrann) is pregnant as “the result of a drunken screw between two people who hardly knew each other”.  She broods in her flat and discusses her predicament with her good friend Anne – she must tell her boyfriend Paul but she knows ’In the end it’s inside me, not him’.  She finds information in a magazine about abortion services in the UK and Anne accompanies her to the ferry – following the footsteps of the many women before her.
Four Corners

Four Corners

Divided into seven segments, Bundy's film contemplates the physical and spiritual landscape of the U.S. 's "four corners," an area embracing the states of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah. Jet streams divide the celestial quadrant marked by the movements of sun and moon. On the earth's surface, the camera captures the play of light as it lingers on mystical, geological landmarks - canyons, craters, sculpted rock formations and the cave drawings etched by the ancient dwellers of the Southwest.

L.A. Nickel

L.A. Nickel

L.A. Nickel envisions the urban landscape of Los Angeles as nightmare and dream. Recording from a window to suggest a vantage point of surveillance, Miller positions the viewer as a voyeur when she documents the interaction of people and policemen on the Skid Row street below. A harsh, "scratch" aural collage heightens the sense of confrontation and aggression. A lush, dramatic orchestration accompanies the second sequence, an evocative night drive through the streets of Los Angeles. This passage is blocked by the presence of a police car, which Miller transforms into an abstracted dance of lights. The thwarting of mobility by authority becomes a metaphor of social confinement.

Made as part of my degree show at Sheffield Polytechnic, this was originally presented as part of a performance piece involving a large number of monitors and a lengthy middle section in which I dropped water onto a hot iron (hence the black part of the video). The piece was constructed using old family Super8 footage, off-air TV material and some live footage shot in Sheffield. The soundtrack was constructed using some very basic monophonic synthesisers and a 4 track recorder on which I remixed some material found in the art school library.

Two days to Soft Rock Cafe - Exploring Mount Arthur's Caves

1983 • 47 min • New Zealand
This Feltex Award-winning documentary dives, abseils and squeezes under the mountain — Mt Arthur in Kahurangi National Park — to record the exploration of the subterranean world of the Nettlebed Cave System. At nearly one kilometre underground the system is New Zealand’s deepest cave, and a mecca for cavers from around the world. The cavers relay their motivations and anxieties as they negotiate the uncharted water-carved limestone labyrinth. Directed by Ian Taylor, it screened in the Lookout series. Claustrophobes beware: there are no lattes at Soft Rock Cafe.

Metal is a circular sculpture, measuring 3 metres in diameter. Mercury is poured upon its base until the whole surface is covered in a layer of the metal, the thickness of which is established on the cohesiveness of the mercury itself, the liquid with the greatest surface tension. Once poured, the metal acts like a skin that picks up vibrations from the ground and the air while a spotlight transfers these surface waves onto the wall making them visible. The whole piece is simply supported to show the properties of the material.

The camera of the show records the Director of the Planetarium, Dionysis Simopoulos and the astrophysicist George Georgopoulos, preparing a projection of the Planetarium, thus presenting to the audience the way of working for the creation of each program, while then the former talks to us about what is really the Planetarium and what it offers to society.
