A worn record by Lou Reed, clips of film, texts that run on the video and are erased: traces of D. Sounds and images collected and rearranged, which recompose a simulated portrait, perhaps not resembling its original, but in which an attempt has been made not to lose that found charge of poetry and provocation. This film was made in 1982, on randomly recovered Super 8 material, shot by D., a seventeen-year-old boy, between 1977 and 1978, and completed with texts taken from interviews recorded in the same period. We have tried to transform forgotten finds, made of hallucinated and lucid self-portraits, significant of an original way of experiencing the condition of youth into active and narrated documentation.

Hell Spit Flexion

Hell Spit Flexion

1983 • 1 min • United States of America
"My moving-visual response to William Blake's "The Marriage of Heaven & Hell," this hand-painted film seems the most rhythmically exact of all my work: it was inspired by memories of an old man coughing in the night of a thing-walled ancient hotel... a triumph of rhythm thru to inspiration. Dedicated to Bill and Stella Pence." - S.B. "Although it was later incorporated into The Dante Quartet in 1987 in a slightly modified form, this film was initially completed in 1983 by Brakhage, and prints exist of the standalone version, which features main and end titles, and a small amount of additional material at its very beginning, including a few small film flares and two frames of a leader lady (which are part of the film, but were removed in 1987)." - Mark Toscano

A short documentary about the creation process of Rosas danst Rosas, the performance that forced Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s international breakthrough and has become a benchmark in the history of postmodern dance. This documentary, directed by Stefaan Decostere for the BRT cultural programme Het Gerucht [The Rumour, ed.], uses fragments of rehearsals and interviews with De Keersmaeker and composer Thierry De Mey, offering a glimpse of the choreographic creative process in which repeated abstract movements play a key role.

Big Brother

Big Brother

1983 • 7 min • United States of America
BIG BROTHER (1983) is a comic book/collage film. The images are taken from commercials and other commercially released films as well as my own shooting. Sections of frames were cut out and then placed into Super 8 film frames which had been painted upon, a mouth here, a leg there. This film can also be read like a comic strip on the rewinds. The film was blown up to 16mm. Ironically my hope had been to keep the film in Super 8 as a discourse on gauge chauvinism, one of the implications in the title.

After the creation of Israel in 1948, Palestinians who chose to remain on their land were banded into farming communities. Most of this land has since been lost to Israeli kibbutz and moshav settlements. The Palestinians, who number one in six Israeli citizens, now must commute to work in Israeli cities, or farm land that is no longer theirs. They also must contend with discriminatory practices in housing, employment, and education, even though they are Israeli citizens. Centering on Umm el-Fahm, the largest Arab village in Israel, ON OUR LAND tells the story of an ill treated segment of Israel's population which has largely been ignored.

Sea, Oh Sea!

1983 • 10 min • Soviet Union
The story of young men and women on vacation. They are constantly separated by various circumstances, including the fantastic and phantasmagoric ones, but at the end, they finally marry. Oh, more, more! parodies Soviet popular culture, i.e. popular music (Italian song "Amore-more-more..."), sugary wedding photos and souvenirs, the maniacal hunt for foreign brands and clothes (such as jeans), primitive Soviet pornography, and the cult of material prosperity.
Climax

Climax

1983 • 10 min • France
The paths of eight characters brush against one another, collide, avoid one another, attract one another or clash in the texture of a Super 8 ballet film. Climax attemps to transalte the sensation of a nightmare which, by nature evades reality, fiction and even memory to engrave syncopated, brief, distorded, repetitive and obsessive pictures in our brains. These pictures are those of a murder fantasy.
Across the Interior of Iceland

Across the Interior of Iceland

1983 • 24 min • Iceland
The film is about travelling on horseback across the Icelandic interior on the main route, which once connected the north of Iceland with the shout. This route was the scene of a tragic accident in the 18th century, when young farmers moving a flock of sheep to the North, perished in a snowstorm. For many years following the incident the track was not used, until the 19th century, when Captain Daniel Bruun from Denmark, accompanied by a photographer and a water-colour artist, crossed the difficult terrain, deep rivers, and rocky heights in sun, rain, fog and wind, marking the way with stones laboriously heaped into cairns.
