Red Sea

1982 • 6 min • United Kingdom
Spring tides at Ynys Llanddwyn at the full and new moon are compared to the filmmaker’s own ‘body tides’ from dark to light and back again. Like other films by Judith Noble (formerly Higginbottom), The Red Sea is concerned with the menstrual cycle, and its relationship to lunar cycle. Higginbottom and other feminist artists such as Catherine Elwes, Carolee Schneemann and Judy Clark were trying to reclaim menstruation from its negative image and assert it as a source of creative energy. The Red Sea is made of 16mm film and 35mm still images, re-worked and over-printed.

Passion Triptych

Passion Triptych

1982 • 3 min
"'Passion Triptych' makes use of three different sequences from the then popular television police series 'Hill Street Blues' recorded on VHS tape. Swann re-filmed the sequences frame by frame on Super-8, creating a three screen semi-abstracted, colour-saturated triptych. The images depict men and women in ambiguous situations of embrace or violence, creating a frieze of charged scenes whose effect is heightened by overlaying the original soundtracks with the wailing of police sirens and other sound effects." - Sotiris Kyriacou

The Branks

The Branks

1982 • 7 min
“Death – Begetting” : symbolic physical death, to enter the Silence; the negation of banality, of everyday language, of non-stop talking; certain “words” of power that guide us to the Silence… A brank, according to Aleister Crowley, is an old Scottish device, designed for holding closed the mouth of a woman – the woman (seen in Tarot, shutting a lion’s mouth) who signifies Strength. Thus it implies the Silence is more powerful than the (physical) Strength.

U.S. Sweat

U.S. Sweat

1982 • 16 min
In U.S. Sweat, which Gorewitz terms a "cathartic reaction to social and personal upheavals," he transforms images of the familiar American landscape into a nightmarish, ghostly vision. Recording throughout the South and in New York, he amassed footage that reflects the American experience. Country roads, gravestones and small-town main streets seen from a car window gradually give way to an ominous vision — saturated by Gorewitz's signature image-processing techniques and lurid, fluorescent colors — of an America dominated by industry and the military. Called a "tour-de-force" by The New York Times, this is a propulsive, kinetic work of rich visual and aural textures. -EAI
