Panorama de Santiago

Panorama de Santiago

1981 • 7 min • Chile
Panorama de Santiago, is a video-performance classified as the first video art made in Chile (1981). In it, the artist runs for several minutes with his camera, making a tour from the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes to the stairs of the Biblioteca Nacional. The image oscillates and distorts as if the spectator were the one running frantically, an effect that -in the artist's words- seeks to speak of the Chilean dictatorial context at the beginning of the 1980s.

Wir sind Sintikinder und keine Zigeuner

Wir sind Sintikinder und keine Zigeuner

1981 • 20 min • Germany
The nine-year-old Sinti girl Brigitta shows us her world. She lives with her family in a caravan site on the outskirts of a small Bavarian town. Everybody still speaks Romani and continues to live by the customs handed down. That means that the children take part in adult life and that the very highly respected parents describe how it used to be. In this community, all age groups live together naturally. For these Sinti, `gypsy' is an insult. At school they are taught there are two cultures, two languages and two realities: that of the Sinti and that of the Germans. While German is spoken at school, the only pupils are Sinti children. Brigitta animatedly describes the material deprivations, which are mollified by the life as `one big family'. Brigitta knows all too well where she belongs.
終りなき夜

終りなき夜

1981 • 17 min • Japan
An old man who used to be a projectionist, a cassette deck that comforts his solitary life, a nude photo of a woman who used to be a mobo (modern boy) and his girlfriend. These are the reality of Narita's performance. He brutally cuts them out and composes the film based on his own theme. It is the sincerity of the cold, detached, painstaking images of his wrinkled, toothless mouth that make him seem so present, even though he has lost his job. Without using any dialogue, the director Nagasaki poetically condenses what he encounters in the small room, which is interesting because it allows us to discover something that we had not noticed in our daily lives.

Along Brighton Beach Avenue

Along Brighton Beach Avenue

1981 • 30 min
The film is a half-hour series of brief close-ups of people on the street, shot from a high, but still intimate, angle. In a constant interplay of figure and ground, the film shows fragments of feet, heads, hands and elbows against the backdrop of an ancient sidewalk .... The film is fast on the eye, with many staccato camera moves. But, partially because the people are bundled up in winter clothes, one experiences it as a succession of cushioned jolts - the collision of soft, bulky forces that enter the frame from all directions. There is, however, too much raw human interest in the footage for the film to ever become completely abstract.

Resisting the binary essentialism of contemporary second-wave feminism, Bean's work points to a more complex celebration of being. Here, she draws on the ecstatic yet troubling inter relationship of a small beetle and its ant hosts, where the beetles secrete a substance that is greedily licked up by the ants to suppress their usual aggression, meaning they can be torn apart by the beetle whilst still submitting themselves to it.
