Free, White and 21

In Pindell’s poignant work, Free, White and 21 (1980) the artist uses performance and caricature to narrate her personal experiences of racism. The film alternates between Pindell recounting her stories and a caricature of a young white woman who rebukes Pindell for her ungrateful and paranoid statements. In criticizing the expectations and stereotypes imposed on a female, black artist, Pindell’s work can also been seen as a contribution to a feminist debate. Though Pindell’s body of work mostly consists of painting that explores texture, colour and structures, this video work stands out as being a seminal work in her career. Free, White and 21 can be found in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

In this narrative performance for video, Burden tells the story of his relationship with a truck named "Big Job." To relate his autobiographical monologue, he sits deadpan before the camera with moving images of the truck behind him. Writes Burden, "During a six-month period, while the artist wrestles with the problem of owning an antique 16,000 lb. freight-truck, Big Job becomes a metaphor for personal insanity. I talk about the 'curse of Big Job,' my foiled plans to transform the truck into a rolling communications command post or a traveling museum, and my difficulty in getting rid of the rig. A true story."

Spirit of the Plains

Towards the end of the 19th century, the imagination of many painters, among them Sydney Long, was captured by a romantic, poetic approach to the Australian landscape. In his creation of an indigenous population of nymphs and satyrs for the bushland he so loved, this film reveals to us Long's efforts to find common ground between European allegorical traditions, the decorative qualities of Art Nouveau and the quest for an Australian identity. The film also examines in detail the various later versions and adaptations of the title work, which Long etched or painted during his years in England.

Arles dolorosa

Arles Dolorosa is a poem about the city where José Guirao was born, through a self-portrait he did by shooting what is referring to his own memories : both far and close. The heat of Arles on a hot summer, antique statues, stones damaged by the wind and faces of old women and people in the crowd of the amphitheater are contrasting with the black bull's painful death during the corrida. All these images are becoming the light, and beauty of the film, which is an ode to a place that will always stay in Guirao's soul.
