Ceremonial Unfurling of Banner of Extinction (Floor of Vanishing)

1980 • 20 min • Japan
Floor of Vanishing was a work Matsuzawa Yutaka presented in a cobblestoned square in Middelburg, the Netherlands square in August 1980, and this video documents the Human Extinction ceremony Matsuzawa performed along with the unfurling of a banner. In this film, Matsuzawa appears highly energetic as he unfolds the pink Banner of Extinction and inscribes on it with a brush: “Humans, Let’s Vanish, Let’s Go, Let’s Go.” The film was shot by Matsuzawa’s eldest daughter Kumiko, who accompanied him on many overseas trips.

Olympic Fragments

Olympic Fragments

1980 • 10 min
Commissioned for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York, Olympic Fragments is a taut, expressive reinterpretation of athletic movement, a tour-de-force of dynamic editing and post-production techniques. Through sophisticated visual and aural juxtapositions, Fitzgerald and Sanborn isolate the gestures and movements of athletes in a controlled, powerful display. Eschewing the "thrill of victory" tradition of broadcast television sports coverage, they allow a portrait of individual skill and grace under pressure to emerge from their manipulation of highly fragmented and choreographed imagery — what they term the "skill, beauty and sheer joy of kineticism.

A work I made when I was attending the film department of the University of Paris 8. At the time, I was living in a downtown area in the northwest of Paris, close to the Place de la Bastille, which was associated with the French Revolution. Building construction sites were scattered around the area due to redevelopment. The shooting location was a building with only walls and floors, whether it was under construction or being demolished. I decided on the composition so that the wall and floor exactly intersect in the center of the screen. In order to capture 1/4 of the screen, 3/4 of the screen must be covered with a mask. Then, while rewinding the film, I took four shots at different frame speeds. One cut, one scene, a fixed screen with no camera work. The same man is walking in each part of the continuous screen, which is divided into four parts. The movement of the same man, who was just walking at the same speed, has four different speeds on the screen.

Samson Peabody-Jones sets out to conquer the untamed west in 1881, in this remarkable film featuring a cast and crew of 100 talented school children. You'll enjoy the escapades of Peabody-Jones as he braves the frontier in search of adventure and finds a life of danger as well as rewards. It takes a miner's ghost, a mysterious parcel and finally the U.S. Cavalry to bring the story to a happy ending. A recommended featurette, with an excellent and original soundtrack score, but very difficult to find.

Fundamento Palo Monte (Silueta Series, Gunpowder Works)

Fundamento Palo Monte (Silueta Series, Gunpowder Works)

1980 • 6 min
Super-8 film transferred to high-definition digital support, colour, silent. Fundamento Palo Monte belongs to the Siluetas, a series of ephemeral works that the artist made between 1973 and 1981 and then recorded on film or in photographs. Made in Iowa, Fundamento Palo Monte shows a form hollowed from the ground and filled with white gunpowder, with three stones in the position of the heart. The fire consumes the silhouette from the base to the head. At times, the flames and thick white smoke obscure the form in the ground, which then reappears through the thinning wisps of smoke as the powder burns out. What remains is the charred figure, the work of earth, fire and air. The time of combustion and the time of the film are one.
