What the Hell's Going On Up There?

What the Hell's Going On Up There?

1979 • 28 min • Canada
A disgruntled Uncle Sam complains that nobody listens to him anymore, and what's more, he doesn't even know what's going on up there. "I thought we were living on the top floor," he mutters. He expedites the ubiquitous Marshall Efron on a fact-finding mission north of the border. Part satire, part serious, this film sets out to package Canada for American consumption, with some of the clichés thrown in. Contrasting with the decidedly lighter side of the film are interviews with well-known Canadians such as Marshall McLuhan, Mordecai Richler, Margaret Atwood, John Kenneth Galbraith, Raoul Duguay, and Pierre Bourgault.

America of the seventies. Where do Los Angeles roads lead?

America of the seventies. Where do Los Angeles roads lead?

1979 • 57 min • Soviet Union
In ancient times, when heraldry was in use and every self-respecting city considered it necessary to have its own coat of arms, it was placed on that coat of arms that was symbolic and lily for the city (fortress tower, deer head, scales of justice, sword or something else, something especially revered). To this day, it would not be worthwhile to preserve this custom and wonder what the residents of Los Angeles, the third largest city in the United States, would like to take as a symbol. They surely would - they certainly would be the California Highways. Even Americans accustomed to car herds, coming from other parts of the country to California, finding themselves in Los Angeles and its suburbs, marvel at the empty weaving of concrete and asphalt belts filled to the brim with gasoline carriages...

Objects with Destinations

Objects with Destinations

1979 • 4 min
Objects from the artist’s studio (hammer, cathode ray tube, circuit board rack, chair, clip light) constitute the subjects for a series of short sequences in which a single object moves through a series of overlapping transformations. These are electronically altered in such a way that their coloration and contours continuously morph. As the transparent images are superimposed one upon the other and faded in and out, they become slightly displaced, giving the impression that the objects are “wandering” across the image plane. In some sequences, the contours and colors of the objects dissociate, or newly arising color fields spread across the pictorial surface. The superimpositions and cross-dissolves result in a minimal amount of action, consistent with the ‘destinations’ implied in the work’s title.
