Fables have their relevance, particularly when dealing with such delicate topics as politics. This is the story of a retired gentleman with a distinctly British demeanor who buys nine provincial flowers to be planted in his garden. He avoids the fleur-de-lis, which, however, doesn't avoid him. Eventually their attitudes towards each other soften due to the beneficial effects of a watering can.

White Red and Green Lights

1978 • 7 min
"White, Red and Green Lights" opens with a blank white screen. A performer enters, and the viewer realizes that the camera is placed above the scene looking back in space toward the floor. The performer brings in fluorescent light tubes and places them on the floor horizontally near the bottom of the screen. This positioning corresponds to the foreground in the filmed scene The lights appear to be black since white is black in negative. The film switches to color negative and the performer brings in both red and green fluorescent tubes. These are also placed near the bottom of the screen. Finally he moves the red and green lights to the side edges of the screen and the film ends with red and green lights running up the sides of the screen.

How can one film nothing, how to depict infinity in a film? A camera pointed towards the sky registers one such attempt. The infinite sky in the frame is seen precisely that way – like nothing, a film stripe worn out, empty surface, 0 (zero). The hand holding the camera is trying to keep the slide in the same motionless position. At one point, the camera slightly moves to the left out of fatigue. A roof with a chimney appears in the bottom left hand corner – the only part of the scene which inadvertently reveals the attempt and the wish – how to film nothing.

Trial Against the Declassed from Poshnja, Berat January 6-7, 1978

Trial Against the Declassed from Poshnja, Berat January 6-7, 1978

1978 • 17 min • Albania
Perhaps the most chilling testament to the ruthlessness of Albania’s communist regime, this documentary presents a public trial in a packed cinema: four young men accused of industrial sabotage and listening to foreign music. In the finale, replicating the Stalinist show trials of the 1950s, the audience applauds the death sentences for two defendants, and long prison terms for the other two who absurdly also lose their voting rights. The ice cold Poshnja is a rarely-screened, forbidden film (it is not even listed on the Albanian archive website) and the sole directing effort of Albania’s leading film scholar, Abaz Hoxha.

Using highly-manipulated and over-processed images, Latham investigates the process of video as inherently fragmented. Weaving together various people’s impressions of the artist and her work, the work demonstrates important parallels between video, storytelling, and the formation of identity — all processes of active fabrication that blend “lies” and truth in the construction of a certain reality, history, or past. Labeling an image of herself talking as “her most recent explanation,” Latham addresses “the construction of her video personality” as an identity outside of herself.
