Who Shall Remain Nameless

Who Shall Remain Nameless

1978 • 14 min
This film juxtaposes extreme close-up film of the activity of ants in the tunnels of an ant farm with a narration by a middle-aged, middle-American male discussing the relation between race riots and the positions of the planets. The narration derives from found tapes I’d discovered in a thrift store that had been recorded by a man named Archie Olson, speaking to his daughter in Minnesota. In other scenes, texts from Joan of Arc and Eldridge Cleaver, patterns of feathers and seeds falling, Harry Partch percussion music, and imagery of multiplying bacteria supply a view of the American political-cultural landscape that continually shifts from the macrocosmic to microcosmic and from practical and conversational to the occult and religious.

I wanted to make a film in which the world is turned upside down, a film made up of images that assert that these images have no meaning. There is a shot that uses a doll, which was washed up on the riverbank where we visited while filming "Mineralogist". I picked it up thinking that I might be able to use it in the shoot. Masanobu Nakamura seemed to think that this shot was my response to "Commemorative Photography" and asked me about it, but I had no idea what it meant so I was at a loss for words.

"Between Glances... plays with the illusion of depth, with interactions between apparent upper and lower planes. Et si on se passait de patrons ?

1978 • 37 min • Belgium
It's possible to work without bosses, and workers have proven it in Belgium, notably at Balai Libéré, a cleaning company at the University of Louvain-la-Neuve, at Sablières de Wauthier-Braine, and at the Textiles d'Ere cooperative, a spinning mill that operated as a cooperative for nearly 30 years. The film focuses mainly on this third experience. The workers (90% of the staff are women), whose memories have been rekindled by a video shot at the time, recount the occupation of their factory. We then see them at work. Everyday scenes and interviews follow one another, revealing the changes that have taken place. Or that sometimes have not taken place.
