Red Light

Red Light

1978 • 9 min • Japan
“This film is assembled from a series of cuts conveying different moods. It is mostly composed of the simple action of seeing images alternately or in succession, such as of scissors cutting against each other, or of the blink of eyes peering through a magnifying glass. I thought of them as being like red, amber and green traffic lights.” (Isao Kota)

Works in the Field

Works in the Field

1978 • 37 min • United States of America
Mountain landscapes, Manhattan cityscapes and images from magazine covers and television news are fragmented through optical printing with computer generated mattes. Intercut with a found documentary about family life in Malaysia, the film becomes an essay on reading. Watching the film is like an accelerated game of Concentration with glimpses of the image appearing inside swirling grids. The juxtaposition of the gridded sequences to the conventionally assembled Malaysian footage formulates an inquiry into the nature and meaning of the "document" in cinema.
We Are Women

We Are Women

1978 • 7 min
A poetic video piece in which Weiss alternates between hand-held shots of women that are surviving in the streets of Mexico City and colourful, kaleidoscopic forms. In a very personal style she combines sound, color, abstractions, reportage, rhythm. A unique melange of realism, absurdism and fantastical, a sort of eerie fairytale that holds a profound social commentary. – Mila van der Weide

In June 1978, Patrick Vallençant made the first ski descent of the southeast face of Artesonjaru in Peru, in the Cordillera Blanca, 6,000 meters above sea level and 60° of slope. He left Huaraz on horseback, a donkey carrying his equipment. While crossing Cajas, the last village on the trail to Lake Paron, he was greeted by Victor and Cesar, two Indians who accompanied him to the lake. The climb to the summit was tiring, requiring as much effort from his arms as from his legs. The beginning of the descent was hesitant, the slope extremely steep. He achieved his feat on June 9, his thirty-second birthday.
The Unemployment Test

The Unemployment Test

1978 • 14 min
The Unemployment Test is presented as a quiz to judge the audience’s knowledge about the welfare system, albeit one backed by a funky disco synth soundtrack. The viewers of the film take the test alongside people in a classroom who are evenly split between those who have benefited from unemployment insurance and others who have not. Short dramatized scenes with non-professional actors play out in two phases. Each skit ends with a question by the narrator. The audience’s an- swers are scored at the end of each phase.

Oil-Coated Umbrellas: Meinung

Oil-Coated Umbrellas: Meinung

1978 • 25 min • Taiwan
Once essential on rainy days in Taiwan, the handcrafted oil-paper umbrella from Meinung, was not only a symbol of local craftsmanship but also a major source of livelihood. However, as Taiwan rapidly shifted toward an industrial and commercial economy in the 1980s, mass-produced plastic umbrellas replaced these meticulously made paper ones. What was once a daily necessity gradually became a nostalgic cultural artifact. Today, a handful of long-established artisans continue to follow traditional methods. With patience and precision, they craft each umbrella by hand. Though its original function has faded, their emotional bond with the craft remains unchanged. Their dedication and skilled workmanship reflect a deep-rooted respect for materials and tradition, preserving a vanishing heritage one umbrella at a time.

Meeting Point

Meeting Point

1978 • 6 min
The video deals with two distinct realities—the inner space of TV images and the viewer’s actual space. Two dots are used as visual symbols of the relationship between these two opposites: one dot on the performer’s forehead (a symbol of the “inner eye”); the other on the screen representing an exterior “point of view.” Procedure: 1. I am dancing to music in front of a static camera. 2. I start the playback of the tape and try to stop the video image at a moment when one dot covers the other. (Sanja Ivekovic)
Let's Make a Sandwich

Let's Make a Sandwich

1978 • 18 min
As a number of critics have pointed out, the title of O'Neill's film Let's Make a Sandwich refers not only to one of the pieces of found footage that make up the film, but to the process of its making, to the layers and sandwiching of the image. That parallel physical surface and his artisanal production of it might link all of O'Neill's work across media and position it as well toward the graphic-the flattening contour line of the cut out-and to collage, both in its cut and its combination as its dominant term.
