Pyramid Drawings

1977 • 12 min
Pyramid Drawings opens with a white screen and a narrow floor area at the bottom. From the left, a performer enters, carrying a bucket of paint. The film is in negative therefore everything light is dark and everything dark is light. The performer begins to draw black lines on what appears to be a white wall. The drawing gradually becomes to be a pyramid seen in perspective. The performer leaves and the drawing is left for contemplation by the viewer. The performer re-enters with a pair of scissors and cuts what appeared to be lines. The lines fall to the floor. The performer then commences to build a new pyramid with new strings stretched back and forth in the space.

Movie Stills

Movie Stills

1977 • 44 min
"The more recent MOVIE STILLS (1977) is a melancholy procession of frozen moments being born, ripening, beginning to die before our eyes. Murphy selected 16 frames from a found home movie, photogrpahed them with a polaroid camera, then filmed the three minutes it took each image to materialize. Because of the higher contrast caused by this rephotography, the pictures seem to be darkening past their prime just as Murphy cuts to the enxt. Every shot starts out white and there's a key element of suspense as one's retitnal afterimages compete with the emerging forms of the developing photo. After a while, the ghost of an anecdote – a woman and two men mugging for the camera, an odd flirtation – develops too. 'A photograph is a secret about a secret,' Diane Arbus once wrote. '"–J. Hoberman, Village Voice.

Workers, employees, hairdressers, young girls met in the street or in the squares... This film is a black and white videogram, filmed on the sly, a little wildly. It is a "film of the streets" as one says "song of the streets", realized with a freedom and a cheerfulness full of hope. - Films-Documentaire.fr

Metro Means of Conveyance

Metro Means of Conveyance

1977 • 7 min • Sweden
In 'Metro Means of Conveyance', Hedman refines the non-literary and visually poetic idiom. Time and motion has been sculpted in graphic black and white on the two-dimensional screen. Time and motion are fundamental dimensions for film as an art form. A pendulum movement, subjectively illustrating a measured length of time. Shadows, contrasts and abstracted light sources, further elaborated. Metro is based on impressions of Chatelet Metro station in Paris. It is individualistic and subtle portrayal of an atmosphere and setting as seen through the linguistic syntax of the film strip. (Filmform)
