One of Mike Jittlov's greatest short films, also known as Animato: Fashionation (1977). The short was made using kinestasis and cutout animation, mostly from fashion magazines illustrating the lyrics of the song "I Know a Place" by Petula Clark. It also extensively used multiple exposures, pixilation and stop motion for the brief live-action sequence. The second half of the film opens The Wizard Of Speed And Time (1988) in a re-scored version.

"I relocated to the Redwoods of Sonoma County upon graduation and in that relocation process the animation for Sonoma began. The design was built around the concept of the long wide horizontal 'pan' shot to express the concept of a dynamic landscape that passes across the screen like a traditional Chinese Scroll Painting. The deep personal meaning relates to the 'relocation' that was occurring within my own being after having done 2½ terms of active combat in the jungle as a carrier enlisted with the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army" -D. Pies. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2012.

Alan Lomax and his associates, beginning in the late 1950s undertook a monumental study of the relationship between style in song and dance cross-culturally. It began with Cantometrics which developed a common language description for the many variables in performance style in the diverse cultures of the world and measured how those variables clustered geographically and in relation to means of subsistence and aspects of social organization. Choreometrics continued this investigation into dance and movement. A continuation of Alan Lomax & Forrestine Paulay's Choreometrics project, this film examines the use of the foot in dance cross culturally. Though this film comes from later in the project, below is an interesting article written by Lomax about the methodology he was developing for this sort of film.

"In this film there is a simple accessible constant which you will have no difficulty in recognizing. There is an equally apparent variable. So your question - to phrase it poorly - might be, what is it that is being measured here? The materials of this film are personal, comfortably so. Nothing in that way distorted or untoward. But the choices of the artist are both crucial and defining, and there is evident attention to what he has called boundaries. This ... is a beautiful film, factually, with a lovely shifting counterpoint in the pacing. Like an old slow blues, after some up-tempo number – so, read it and think." – Robert Creeley
Bark-Rind

Bark-Rind

1977 • 30 min • Australia
“I wanted to make grass grow...to show the life force of a tree. Bark-Rind was shot totally single-frame...each shot exposed three times...close-up, mid shot, long shot. I used the sound of insects, signifying pollination, life...and I tried to make their sound visible. The camera starts on the grass, flowers, then works its way up the trunk, into the crown of the tree, then onto the next tree. The film vibrates...switching from sound/film...film/sound. You wonder whether you're looking at a film image or at the sound itself.” (Paul Winkler)
