Fall Line

Fall Line

1977 • 17 min • Australia
A breath-taking experience that lets the viewer glimpse the thrill of pitting oneself against great elemental forces - and succeeding. In a comparison among four sports (skateboarding, surfing, skiing and hang gliding, the similarities of handling body movement are elaborated. A "fall line" is the straightest, fastest line downward - whether it be down wave, slope or air corridor. The comparative ways in which a body acts to slow the descent and adapt to the unexpected are shown on land, air and water. Makes us aware that these exhilarating sports have been made possible by new technologies, and illustrates that challenging experiences need not necessarily be competitive or affect the environment adversely. An excellent motivational film. Champion surfer, Nat Young, compares body movements in four relatively new sports: skateboarding, surfing, skiing, and hang gliding. They all use the fall-line...the shortest way from the top to the bottom. 16mm

Marina: we even use our car in the performance, in '77, for the Paris Biennale in the front of the museum we made this piece called Relation In Movement, which Ulay is driving the car and I had the megaphone out of the window, and I would say the numbers of the circle as we was passing, because it was just going in a circle, on and on and on. The idea was the car collapsed or we collapsed. and after 16 hours, the motor burned out and created this minimal trace on the marble as a black circle. Sun - A Film without a Camera

1977 • 4 min • Poland
From the 1960s, Antoniszczak devoted himself to perfecting the technique of non‑camera animation. This period saw the creation of the first animagraph‑pentagraphs — machines for transferring drawings onto film stock. Sun, an animation less than four minutes long, was the first film produced completely using this method. The black‑and‑white drawings were made in the technique of woodcut impressed directly onto the celluloid. The vibrating, jagged image reflects the flickering character of sunrays, and conveys a tale of the transience of human existence and the permanence of the universe.
