Edge Forces

Edge Forces

1976 • 11 min • United States of America
EDGE FORCES is an abstract collage of rapid nebulous forms and calligraphic lines. The frame is used as a "canvas" for thousands of fleeting images that try to expand beyond its confines. Viewers are compelled either to comprehend the dynamic flow of the images, or to make free subjective associations with them.

"Bruce Wood's films are among the most sensual of any "abstract" animated work ever made. Projected, they generate a fluid stream of organic images in a carefully controlled post-cubist space comparable to the work of painters like Jackson Pollock. Viewed one frame at a time, (which is the way much of the footage is shot), they recall the rich lines and textures of such master etchers as Rembrandt. Wood's use of camera movement during the exposure of each individual frame - like drawing - together with the illusion of movement in projection make his films both beautiful and unique." -Bill Judson, Curator of Film, Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute.

Running

Running

The film tries to 'destroy time' by the cyclical reworking of a short period of time. Gradually the image becomes less discernible and the flashing positive and negative images force the viewer to stare rather than looking at the film. As the film progresses the viewer becomes trapped in a short period of time.

De Chirico in Legoland, perhaps. This film was part of the programme of a ‘happening’ on the same surrealist theme staged one night in the barns and grounds of a Suffolk farm. It seemed just right to conjure up the marvellous of the metropolis in the back of a rural beyond. Some of the opening shots are borrowed from Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent film. The textual passages in the voice-over come from Giorgio de Chirico’s 1929 ‘novel’, Hebdomeros. In 1976, my first child was six years old and mad on Lego. There was lots of it about the house and it was only a short step to using the white bricks to construct miniature versions of the master of melancholy’s towers, squares and arcades. And another short step to imagining a cluster of suspect scenarios acted out within these metaphysical spaces. RS

Red Church

Red Church

“I wanted to make a sequel to Chants…the gold against black, but I wasn’t quite sure how. One day I went to St Mary’s Cathedral here in Sydney. After looking at the stained glass windows for some time, on the way out I noticed that they were selling slides of the interior…and whoever photographed the stained glass had used a red filter. This was the image I was after…red against black. By simply photographing and rephotographing the slide (up to 200 times, in some cases)…and varying the exposure by changing the distance between the light source and the slide, I was able to give the feeling of looking up…which is what you do in a church…from the knave up to the stained glass up to the ceiling…up to heaven in this red light. The upward motion was layered without visible edits by superimposing strips of the varyingly exposed film, in the lab.” (Paul Winkler)

Staggeringly simple films: a man itching his back, a man thinking, a man yawning, but like the works of Samuel Beckett, these minute gestures stand in as grand statements of the human condition, akin to the films of Bas Jan Ader and Marcel Broodthaers.
