Skins

Skins

"Skins" is a silent film. No sound. I shot it on 8mm film in 1972 and finished it in 1976 as a 16mm film. The surface of motion picture film is organic matter, made from skin and hooves of cattle. Motion picture film, especially color film, has an emulsion of slightly varying thickness, so that the images on each physical frame can be seen in slight relief when looked at under reflected light. This surface structure is exploited in "Skins", through a slow process of soaking in water until dye layers (first yellow, then magenta, and last cyan) that constitute the images, lift off the film substrate and rearrange themselves in curtains of wrinkled matter. The effect is to reanimate the original subject matter of the film recording, taxidermy animals in a natural history museum diorama. Another effect is to unleash the organic matter of emulsion first animated by a living creature. (Barbara Lattanzi)

Sound of One

Sound of One

1976 • 11 min
Financed by the National Endowment of the Arts. Prior to filming the SOUND OF ONE, Bartlett studied dance as a student enrolled at the Inner Research Institute. His teacher was Martin Inn. This student-teacher relationship evolved into a collaboration in which Barlett and Inn scripted a summer workshop course entitled The Application of T'si Chi Ch'uan to the Art of Filmmaking. SOUND OF ONE is the fruit of that program, a melding of the two disciplines. SOUND OF ONE records the short form of the T'ai Chi dance as a solo figure moves through changing landscapes – oceanside to forest to volcano peak – to represent the five elements: water, wood, fire, air and metal.

My Life

1976 • 30 min • Japan
This work was started in 1967 as a documentation of Nakajima’s life. The footage was edited into a single piece for the first time in 1974, in time to show the work to the curator Barbara London, who was visiting Japan. Generations of his family were lost and gained that year, with Nakajima's mother passing away, and then his child was born. The piece is an installation with two monitors; the left presents his mother and himself, and the right, his child and himself. Nakajima continues to work on the sequels of "My Life" with his grandchild.

The crumbling beauty of a soon-to-be-demolished, impoverished Red Hook neighborhood in the mid-1970s is revealed to us moment by moment, structure by forgotten structure. The circuslike brass music suggests a public face of “a city in progress” while the addicts, thieves, and other lonely people are shown to us as the human cost: those who will be left out of that development.

Time lags between cause and effect during a cello performance. In the work, the variables of sound are related to the variables of the camera. For example: glissando = zoom, out of tune = out of focus. The camera is used as a musical instrument, a device that translates sound events into visual elements.
