Iris

Iris

1976 • 9 min
The base sequence of Iris is a constructed cycle of coloured events followed by its copy chromatically inverted though a non compliant lab process. This sequence is then again copied-inverted, and so forth, each new sequence generating in turn the next one. Through this process, each subsequent generation complicates and enriches picture. The result is quite impressive. The sound, produced on a frequency synthesizer (oscillators and filters), punctuates the invert-copy sequences.

The Santa Tapes

The Santa Tapes

His Name is Art Baldwin and, according to the Chicago Tribune, he was "the only authentic State Street Santa Claus." For three decades, he presided over Santa's Cozy Cloud Cottage in Marshall Field & Company's flagship store, led the annual Christmas parade and brought joy to thousands of children. Warm and compassionate, blunt and irascible, he leads us here through his preparations for a day in "The Chair." In a remarkable and revealing conversation, he gives us an inside look at the hard life of a department store Santa including his unexpurgated opinions on kids, gold, Grammas, Mexican women, bad knees, good friends and money. It is a bittersweet view from the other side of The Cozy Cloud Cottage -- touching, maddening and joyful. This is a portrait of Santa you've never seen before and will never forget.
La banque du sperme

La banque du sperme

Les Gazolines is a group from the Homosexual Revolutionary Action Front (FHAR) formed in Paris in 1972 and dissolved in 1974. The movement was founded by Maud Molyneux, Patrick Bertaux and Paquita Paquin as a “kind of continuation of FHAR”. The small group stands out for its aesthetic and ideological provocation, and its games on gender. Their rallying cry is “Dick!” Initially, the group was nicknamed the "Camping Gaz Girls". Its members showed a "camp" humor, proclaiming that "makeup is a way of life", or even "Proletarians of all countries, caress yourself” and “Let’s nationalize the glitter factories!” Their behavior often caused scandal, for example when the Gazolines overturned a police van during a demonstration against the destruction of the Halles de Paris or during the funeral of the Maoist militant Pierre Overney. Films such as The Sperm Bank by Philippe Genet and Pierre Chabal testify to their liveliness and impertinence.

1976 • 52 min • United Kingdom
This film presents a compelling visual and aural analysis of Shilluk kingship in 1975, and provides a very useful complement to Evans-Pritchard’s 1948 text, The Divine Kingship of the Shilluk. Although the Reth (king) has been reduced to the status of second-class magistrate in dispute settlement by the Sundanese government, he is still the focus of political and national identity for a Shilluk people composed of competing territorial groupings. At the death of the Reth, his spirit passes into the Nile.

Pilotone Study No. 1

I made this film in the course of a single day using a borrowed sync. set-up. Color and sequence of event has been preserved. My concerns in the film were to photograph and record events that were anticipated, but accidental, within the confines of a format that would provide a context of determined artificiality. As part of my artistic research, dating back to the years from 1975 to 1978, among the objectives I felt the need to give expressive autonomy to the film medium, understood no longer as a mere reproduction of a performance, a happening or a workshop . Looking, not as a director, but as a visual artist, to a certain underground and independent Cinema, this is the first of his films (in 8mm color film) by direct editing on the camera, with internal and external shots, entirely superimposed.
