Jacki

Jacki

1976 • 30 min • East Germany
Andrees’ graduation project approaches the perky 14-year-old Jacki mainly through her social environment: the stressed patchwork family mother, the solitary long-distance truck driver father, the eclectic neighbourhood. The closer the film gets to its protagonists, the freer the movements of the camera become, gliding through a studio as if in a trance or flying over the nocturnal motorway as if over a UFO landing strip.

Artificial Reality

Artificial Reality

1976 • 15 min
The work resulted from one of photographic and film seances, as the artist called them. The use of the procedures of multiplication and the mutual overlapping of semitransparent images on photographic film produces the impression of movement: veiling and unveiling the private parts of the body, but also a sense of artificiality and subversion inherent in photography and film that records the image of reality and “falsifies” it at the same time.

Sculptor Vasyl Borodai

Sculptor Vasyl Borodai

1976 • 19 min • Soviet Union
The early years of the sculptor's life and work. Vasyl Borodai is a People's Artist of Ukraine, a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Arts, and a veteran. He came to the art institute after the war, and took up military themes only 10 years later - his memories were too painful. He is the author of monuments to fallen partisans and soldiers, a series of graphic and sculptural works "Across Egypt," portraits of prominent people of Ukraine, and a monument to legendary heroes, the founders of Kyiv. The fate of the work of sculptor Vasyl Borodai is interesting from the point of view of continuing the Soviet tradition of bans. His monument to the October Revolution on Independence Square was one of the first monuments demolished in Ukraine since Ukrainian independence. His other works, such as the monument to the Chekists and Motherland, are still the subject of controversy as monuments to the Soviet past.

X

X

1976 • 9 min
"The insinuation of camera movements and the familiarity of the same forms recurring in black and then luminous white shapes, makes X an intriguing visual play on positive/negative space. Scale, depth and angle of view are indecipherable. Is it the object or the cameras which moves across the frame? This Rubic's cube for seeing simultaneously demonstrates the illusionism of cinematic space and the camera's ability to isolate and transform. Grenier's use of silence in X is perfectly à propos to its concerns. -Raphael Bendahan, Vanguard, Summer 1985. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2014.
