A Day at the Central Market

A Day at the Central Market

1976 • 25 min • Taiwan
When Taipei is still quiet and asleep, trucks after trucks emerge in the dark with fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood and meat. Intermediate wholesalers' auction chants rise and fall; the Central Market is getting ready to feed the city's population. The film offers a glimpse into the lively hustle and bustle of the Market in the 1970s, but was likely banned from broadcast due to its perceived display of the unhygienic conditions.

A succession of visual emotions in a sort of “filmed rotogravure,” where sequences and segments follow an ironic and dramatic logic that highlights the obsessions, the poverty, and the myths that shook the neoconsumerist society of those years. This approach frames, but at the same time transcends, pure reportage, venturing into a reflection on the meaning of seeing and imagining. The techniques employed range from direct rotoscope to works-in-progress, from citationism to photographic contamination.
