Chronicle of Greek Dictatorship 1967-1974

1976 • 37 min
The Chronicle of Greek Dictatorship 1967-1974, is a 37 minute documentary, unpublished for decades, that records important events, from the funeral of Georgios Papandreou and Giorgos Seferis to the trials of Alekos Panagoulis and other fighters against the regime. Voulgaris began shooting on his own with a super-8 camera, copies of which he later sent in Paris to Costas Gavras and Chris Marker. The latter decided to help Voulgaris, sending him a new 16mm camera and reels thus he was able to continue the shooting.

Coloured micro-drops sprayed onto transparent film stock, small dots spread at random in a space indifferent to the filmstrip's division into frames. This produces an abundance of effects: swarming, flurries, Brownian movements, ephemeral and vibratile forms, slowly increasing in number until they darken the screen, golden flashes of visual crumbles. What is projected onto the screen, as much as the film and its dots, schemas and drawings are moving figures, perceptual and mental motifs, visual modes that are created by the viewer's reception and interpretation of this visual "information".

In Glauben Sie nicht, dass ich eine Amazone bin (Don't you believe that I am an Amazon), Ulrike Rosenbach evokes the history of female representation since ancient Greece. A closed-circuit-video projects the face of the artist and a cutout reproduction of Stefan Lochner's Madonna of the Rose Bower (1448) onto one another. The video-portrait of the 33-year-old artist practicing archery animates the icon of the holy virgin. Rosenbach shoots fifteen arrows into the face of the Madonna and simultaneously into herself. Representing the allegorical roles of women as "mothers, housewives, prostitutes, saints, virgins, or Amazons," the Madonna also evokes the myth of the Greek goddess Artemis.

"I was asking if language can express action in any meaningful way. I chose a structure for this film. In the first half, a set of images followed verbal commands. Each image served as an object to answer a command. Then I let the images play without the verbal framework. In the first half of WHITE MAN, seeing the image is shortened or constrained by having to answer to verbal demands. The relaxation of structure in the second half, releases emotional and narrative qualities in the images themselves and their positions. White man can’t be blamed for the action. White man can’t see." -- E.B.

Camelamos naquerar (We Want to Speak) is an adaptation of the theatre play of the same name which was born out of a collaboration between Romani poet and university professor José Heredia Maya and Romani flamenco dancer and choreographer Mario Maya; the latter also performs in the piece, along with other artists. The title in Caló, the language used by Gitanos, translates as ‘we want to speak’, a revolutionary message that illustrates the efforts to reclaim a place in Spanish history for the Roma people and denounce the institutional injustice suffered by the community. It takes as its starting point the Pragmatic decrees signed by the Catholic Monarchs at the end of the fifteenth century, which heralded the long persecution of the Roma people, and continues right up to the twentieth-century Francoist laws.
