Not So Much a Facelift…

Not So Much a Facelift…

1976 • 25 min • United Kingdom
A short documentary exploring the UK’s 1970s approach to urban renewal through General Improvement Areas. Mixing location footage from Blackburn, Norwich, and Oxford with unexpectedly quirky presentation, the film contrasts small-scale housing improvements with the sweeping redevelopment schemes of the post-war era. Produced as a government public information film and shown at meetings between planners, architects, and residents, it stands as a modest, humane entry in Britain’s civic-minded documentary tradition.

In Mirror Road, Hill uses the camera and image processing devices to explore the malleability of electronic colors and image density. Amorphous structures move across the monitor like drifting clouds, changing color and direction. This short film tells a story in the form of a poem that calls for equality for children who lack opportunities. It was created by Surapong Pinijkhar, who submitted it to the Bangkok Bank Documentary Film Festival in 1977. Despite exceeding the standards of traditional Thai documentary films, the judges were too afraid to give it the top prize, but they also couldn't deny its brilliance, so they awarded it a special prize. This documentary film is a creative masterpiece of the nation. This film has been registered as part of the National Film Heritage, first edition, in the year 2011 (B.E. 2554).
While Revolved

While Revolved

1976 • 9 min
(This film has been referred to as both White Revolved and While Revolved.) Project at 18 fps. This film is concerned with the projected, not just light or the emulsion or the illusion or the projector or the camera, but all of them. The surface of the film, the grain, is remembered when a similar but illusionistic surface appears (just as magnified), crossing the frame. Other times the grain is left to itself. There are the idiosyncratic focusing qualities of shadows acting as diaphragms inside the image. The elusive background confounds itself with the foreground. The notions of appearances and disappearances transform themselves in notions of time. Made with a grant from the Canada Council.
