Hello Boys

Hello Boys

1975 • 12 min • United States of America
Hello Boys documents a performance at the Gallery Gerald Piltzer in Paris. Seen through the glass of a large fish tank, Wilke, nude, performs a repertoire of studied erotic gestures to the accompaniment of rock music. Entrapped in her fish bowl, on display behind glass, she is both subject and object. Suggesting the iconic female figure of a mermaid, with its ambiguous implications of sexual power and powerlessness, Wilke explores the representation of female sexuality and the male gaze.

Well, now the flesh is still intact: the black fleece and a white belly, the soft curve of the hips, narrow waist and pearly breasts that rise at the option of rapid breathing, in which the rhythm is still precipitating. You against her, one knee in the floor, you lean more. Head with long curly hair, which alone has preserved some freedom of movement, moves, struggles, the mouth of the girl opens and twists, while the flesh yields, the blood spurted on the tender skin, tense, the black eyes widen disproportionately, the mouth opens more, the head goes right and left, with violence, one last time, then more gently, at the end fall back and stop in the mass of black hair.

Beams wrote of Solo, “This was a game of cycles I set up for myself on 4 × 6″ index cards. I made a grid, and drew a cycle to fit that grid, and then used each drawing from that cycle as a starting point for another cycle.” Glimpses of nude figures paired with the artist’s humming and domestic dialogue create the feeling of an abstract diary.

The disorderly growth of large urban centers in the country and the discussion about the development and existence of cultural spaces. Based on the example of the Teatro de Ópera in Campinas, a building that managed to consolidate construction and space for the existence of a square, theater and architecture are discussed, pointing out the future coexistence between men and cities. Using models, the film presents a new urban concept of the square, as a point of bringing people together for an encounter with cultural things, combining gardens, concert halls, compilation rooms and libraries. A theatrical rehearsal, held in an unfinished theater in Campinas / SP, designed by the architect Fábio Penteado.

“After three very hectic films, I needed something to soothe my nerves. I came across these Coptic crosses in a Greek souvenir shop. and at the time I also heard some Gregorian chants. I thought these cheap plastic crosses looked really beautiful...and I shot them against black velvet so that they appeared to float, emanating something, in a deep space...kind of heavenly images. Nothing much happens...it's really a meditation. Funnily enough I found that the Hare Krishna Movement (which was flourishing at the time) rented the film out a lot to use at their camps. Another time Albie [Thoms] used some of the footage on GTK [ABC TV's youth/pop program], where it looked very odd indeed. I believe that Gregorian chants were in the hit parade only recently. This sort of spirituality touches all kinds of people...” (Paul Winkler)
