L.A. Carwash

1975 • 8 min
A film evolving out of the artist's experiments with dual screen projection and concerned with conjunctive and disjunctive coupling suggested by the qualities of light and sounds at the Village Carwash in Los Angeles. The sound and picture exist as complete and separate entities coinciding only for four seconds.
Consumer Art

Consumer Art

1975 • 16 min • Poland
Probably the most notorious work by Natalia LL, Consumer Art presents models delighting in bananas, frankfurters or ice-cream. Obviously, this seemingly innocent activity acquires a strongly erotic edge. Combination of a “cold” film recording with a “hot” sensual motif stands for a rejection of the purely analytical character of conceptual art.

Gold for the Gods

Zhonggang, a former commercial harbour in Miaoli County once suffering from sedimentation and decline, thrived again with its joss paper (ghost money) industry. Almost every family was part of it: Different generations worked together, attaching gold foils and stamping the paper in red ink, before sending it to dry. When massive stacks of golden joss paper basked in the sun, the town seemed to be covered in dreamy golden waves.

Young Lord

Young Lord

1975 • 14 min
A young woman talks about the "Young Lord", the Puerto Ricans who are living in the United States but do not have the necessary diploma to find work. The movie tracks back the story of the movement, born in 1969. Inspired by the american black fights, it is at first a very political movement. it gets more social around 1970. The movie makes us discover a place of refuge for the junkies. They talk about the difficult life conditions of the minorities, about drogue problems and about the initiatives that are meant to help them. They denounce a governmental plan which is supposed to get ride of the blacks and Puerto Ricans by using drogues: the methadone substitution program, legal and provided by the government, holds the junkies into a mental slavery, which drives them to their death. They also talk about the whole propaganda system and the mental conditioning of society.

The Recognition Construction IV: Recognition Construction in Film

1975 • 16 min • Japan
Originally shot on 16mm film and presented at Maki Gallery, this work primarily focuses on traffic traveling up and down the major traffic artery Omotesandō in Tokyo. Prefaced by the Wittgenstein quotation included below, the image focuses on the vanishing point—aligning it with the top of the frame in wide shots—and movements of vehicles up and down the boulevard. While the film's first half presents a stationary shot, the second half follows individual cars and motorbikes, zooming in to frame them at a consistent size even as they advance toward and recede from the camera.

Four million Tiv people form the major culture of the Benue state of southern Nigeria. They are popularly known as the greatest democrats in Africa as their society is based on fraternal cooperation between age mates rather than on authoritative chieftaincy. Men of an age work together on communal farming and house building and celebrate their achievements with feasts famed for the excellence of their music and dance. Their women create amongst the greatest dances in Nigeria within their extended family compounds. Each year, during the dry season, when there is little farm work, the leaders of the dance teams compose songs to record recent experiences and new features in their lives which they express in the rhythms and gestures of their dance.

Ramos , a cape verdean american, traveled to the islands of Sao Tiago, Fogo and Sao Vicente , and was the only american camera to capture the historic end of 500 years of Portuguese colonial rule. Over eighty hours of video were shot, and efforts are currently underway to raise funds to restore and transfer the rest of videos in this valuable archive.

Psychedelic –and at times sinister– music by Shinpei Kikuchi accompanies a disorienting display of reproduced imagery taken from magazines and posters of sunny beaches and bikini models. Tanaami made positive and negative reprographic prints of these images onto transparent cel sheets, placed them on top of one another, and twisted them in different directions to create a moiré effect. Speaking on the work, Tanaami explained his paradise only exists in the world of reproduction.
Niger-Norway

Niger-Norway

1975 • 41 min • Norway
A comparison of women’s life in Niger and Norway. Film footage and photos taken in the beginning of the 1970s in the village of Maïné-Soroa, in Eastern Niger, are juxtaposed with audio-visual material from Tromsø in Northern Norway. Using a simple, didactic voice-over, the film questions many stereotypes about women’s life in Africa and Norway. It is an attempt to use audio-visual tools and fieldwork experience to teach cross-cultural understanding and ethnocentrism in Norway.
