TV Tubes

TV Tubes

TV Tubes is a part of a collection of video art works entitled Videocean by Vibeke Sorensen, created in 1975. Sorensen produced the video for TV Tubes using a Rutt/Etra synthesiser (raster scan modulator) and Grass Valley Switcher at the WNET TV Lab in New York City. She performed the video synthesizer live and recorded it in real-time. Sorensen created the music immediately afterwards, considering the video as a dynamic score for her original composition, which was realized on a large Moog synthesizer housed at the Electronic Music Studios in the Music Department at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany. The music and video were combined at the WNET TV Lab. TV Tubes has been exhibited many times in performance, on television and cable in the 1980s, and at conferences and exhibitions since it was completed.

The array was the basic image upon which I performed a variety of operations. The Rutt/Etra synthesizer allows one to alter the height, width, depth, and the horizontal and vertical amplitude of the raster. The resultant image is displayed on a cathode ray tube and rescanned by a black and white camera which then enters a video switcher for adding outlines, color, wipes, or other images. I chose outlines and color for Temple , for simplicity but also because I only had two hands and could not modify everything at once.

Hand Held Day

Hand Held Day

1975 • 6 min
"Beydler's magical Hand Held Day is his most unabashedly beautiful film, but it's no less complex than his other works. The filming approach is simple, yet incredibly rich with possibilities, as Beydler collapses the time and space of a full day in the Arizona desert via time-lapse photography and a carefully hand-held mirror reflecting the view behind his camera. Over the course of two Kodachrome camera rolls, we simultaneously witness eastward and westward views of the surrounding landscape as the skies, shadows, colors, and light change dramatically. Beydler's hand, holding the mirror carefully in front of the camera, quivers and vibrates, suggesting the relatively miniscule scale of humanity in the face of a monumental landscape and its dramatic transformations." -Mark Toscano. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2010.

A child plays on the beach; we are in home-movie territory. For years I thought I had made a film-poem, without knowing how to explain it, until Gilles Deleuze created the concept of "perception-image": A character acts on the screen and it is assumed to see the world in a certain way. But simultaneously the camera sees him, and sees his world from another point of view which thinks, reflects, and transforms the viewpoint of the character [...]. In short, perception-image finds its status, as free indirect subjective, from the moment that it reflects its content in a camera-consiousness which has become autonomous ('cinema of poetry'). (Gilles Deleuze, Cinema I: The Movement-Image).

Film Gaudí

Film Gaudí

When I first arrived in Barcelona in 1974 I decided to make a film about architect Antoni Gaudi's Park Guell. I found a film already conceived in the 1914 design; it was enough to follow the trajectories traced by Gaudi, imagine them as a labyrinth, reproduce the bursting of the mosaics through an analogous fracture of linear temporality. In the editing I tried to avoid showing passers-by. No human figure should get in the way of the appearance of that fantastic architecture. The stop-motion technique applied to the position and parameters of the camera still seems suitable for representing the undulating space of the park.
