Rodilla negra

Rodilla negra

1975 • 14 min • Colombia
In this short film, the title of which translates as "Black Knee", a team of football players (played by members of the Barrios Unidos Cali team) encounter a pair of skinnydipping hippies out in the fields and steal their transistor radio. This seems to trigger something in their most legendary player, Jonny Mosquera: a terrible syndrome that makes him literally fall to his knees. Like La hamaca, Agarrando pueblo, Carne de tu Carne and other films made by Mayolo, this film blends deeply unsettling imagery and lowkey genre filmmaking into an equally unsettling and exhilarating realism.

Groundwork

A poetic tribute to the establishment of the maple farm in Monterey, MA, owned and operated by JoAnn Elam's friend Bonner McAllester and her husband Joe Baker. Elam and McAllester were close friends since their time at Antioch College together, and Elam would return to the farm and make films many times through the 1980s. Using double exposure and occasional rapid editing, this film follows McAllester, Baker, and a group of friends as they live in the teepee first built on the property, dig the foundation for a more permanent structure, harvest and prepare their crops, and build a new wooden structure on top of the dug-out foundation. Elam films the workers with a focus on their bodies and hands, emphasizing the tactility of their labor, but at other times also foregrounds the ethereal quality of their natural surroundings.

Based on Gabriel Fackre’s 1974 preparatory text for the World Council of Churches’ Nairobi Assembly, the film offers a visual interpretation of “Jesus Christ Frees and Unites,” channeling themes of spiritual liberation and collective awakening through surreal, church-coded countercultural imagery.

Experimental Dancer

In contrast with McCarthy's recent projects, however, many of his older works are little short of incendiary--particularly three videos from 1975, whose now lo-fi texture and queasy saturation only add to their bad-dream quality. Here is McCarthy, in Experimental Dancer, as something legitimately alarming: an idiot self-celebrant prancing naked in a grotesque, grinning mask, tucking his cock between his legs or pulling it into distension, waving scissors around, ceremonially trimming his pubic hair, and pushing his anus toward the camera.

About ‘Song of Ceylon’ by Basil Wright

About ‘Song of Ceylon’ by Basil Wright

1975 • 30 min • Germany
Song of Ceylon was commissioned for the short-lived German TV-series Telekritik and broadcasted in 1975. In Telekritik documentary approaches were analysed and made available for a critique of contemporary TV, its aesthetics and modes of production. Other authors for the series include Hartmut Bitomsky, Rainer Gansera and Klaus Wildenhahn. In the 30-minute movie, Farocki shows and comments on excerpts from the film Song of Ceylon by Basil Wright (and a short segment of Eisenstein's Mexico-fragments). Farocki's voice-over describes part of the movie, focussing on details and montage. He also uses didactic and descriptive drawings and intertitles to confront the classic documentary and its stylistic approaches with contemporary TV.

Translucent Appearances

Translucent Appearances

"Oblique mattes, instead of blocking the vision, accentuate our ability to see and appreciate details, narrowing and expanding the focus of our attention, rendering symmetry and simplicity simply unbalanced. Through repetition of this approach, the movement and the framing become a sensual force —and the objects appear in all their voluptuousness. Gerson has employed this technique repeatedly. In his Translucent Appearances (1975), thirty-five different shots of Niagara Falls are blocked by horizontal, monochromatic mattes. The object is shaped —water flowing seeking a form that will suffice. These are films that disclose gradually, changing revealed and unrevealed layers of visual information." Mónica Savirón
Conflict

Conflict

1975 • 11 min • United Kingdom
"This film was made in an effort to illustrate briefly the parody of life as a series of conflicts. For example the initial conflict between innocence and social convention, as seen in the confusion of a child. I have tried to project the subconscious conflict-contradiction-of life and inevitable death. Thus the film is in two movements as it were. In the first, a figure dressed in white to symbolise life, moves through and explores a series of structures and objects. In the second movement the figure is replaced by a figure in black, who wanders back through the wreckage of the structures. As death, she controls life until they write into nothingness." - Elaine Shemilt
