'A Pint of Plain' was filmed on location in and around Shepherd's Bush, here in West London. Because O'Sullivan enabled his actors to use improvisation and gave them no formal script, the film has a raw, gripping and truthful 'drama – documentary' feel about it.
Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scenes

1975 • 5 min
"This mysterious, delightful film opens with a sound collage of jazzy music and voices played against a black background. After a few minutes, there is an extended shot of a young woman sitting at a table by a window with a slight look of embarrassment as she tries to keep a straight face under the camera’s gaze. Made just after Shift, it continues Gehr’s early experiments with sound editing. It is startling in the context of his other work as his first film with a straight on close shot of a person." – David Schwartz

Ali in Wonderland

Ali in Wonderland

1975 • 59 min • France
Ali in Wonderland unveils the condition of immigrant workers in Paris in the 1970s. It is a cry of anger against exploitation and racism, uncompromisingly raising the role of the French state, the media, capitalism, and colonization in this system of domination that crushes those who suffer it. In this experimental essay on the condition of Algerian migrants in Giscard's France in the mid-1970s, every aesthetic choice has a precise and legible political motivation and gives body and voice to a figure completely absent from the experimental cinema of the time: that of the immigrant worker. Abouda is one of the children of immigrants seen in the film, and not a simple activist serving a cause, which is why the emotion of her experimental gesture, which she throws in the viewer's face, springs from a ferocity inscribed in her body, from an insatiable anger that inhabits her gaze.

Letícia Parente was a pioneer of video in Brazil, and In is one of her earliest video works. It depicts the artist entering a closet, suspending herself from a hanger, and closing the door. Parente used video as a political tool to protest the military dictatorship in Brazil, and to comment on the mass torture committed by the government. Mechanical Ballet

Mechanical Ballet

1975 • 9 min • United Kingdom
The original material that forms the basis for Mechanical Ballet is an anonymous short reel of film of what appears to be car crash tests, carried out in a deadpan and somewhat cumbersome manner. Reworked into a two-screen film and divorced from their original context, they take on both a sinister and humorous quality. Mechanical Ballet was born out of an interest in ‘found footage’ film (in its relation to collage and assemblage) and the possibilities offered by the London Film-Makers’ Co-op workshop in terms of manipulation of the filmstrip and the film frame, projection, duration and the film printing process.
