Elasticity

Elasticity

1975 • 26 min • United States of America
Impressionistic surrealism in three acts. The approach is literary experimental with optical effects. There are three mental states that are interesting: amnesia, euphoria and ecstasy. Amnesia is not knowing who you are and wanting desperately to know. I call this the White Night. Euphoria is not knowing who you are and not caring. This is the Dream of Meditation. Ecstasy is knowing exactly who you are and still not caring. I call this the Memory of the Future. This is an autobiographical film funded by the American Film Institute.

Rainbow's Children

Rainbow's Children

1975 • 24 min • United States of America
In 'Rainbow's Children', Lloyd Williams reveals the dreamer awakening; erotic displacements of dreams are transformed into the erotic realities of life itself – although still poetically suffused with a dream like languor which the filmmaker cannot escape. The texture of flesh, the ambiguity of longing and the colors of psychedelic apotheosis all merge into a languorous ecstasy which Lloyd Williams is adept in translating into the medium of film. All the varieties of film technique: slow motion, multiple-exposure, fast motion, camera in full flight and frozen image, he uses for the revelation of his intense fantasy, whether from dreams or from real-life or from hallucinated contemplation. His work shows that the dreamer is, indeed, awakening into a whole new world of erotic fantasy, muted with desire. If hard core films shock you, the films of Lloyd Williams will caress you." –Charles Boultenhouse

Think Bike - Edward Judd

Think Bike - Edward Judd

1975 • 1 min • United Kingdom
This punchy warning to motorists is a memorable example of the simple, take-no-prisoners school of public information warnings. Using a fist and an open palm, actor Edward Judd (in the tight roll-neck jumper that was a symbol of no-nonsense masculinity in the late 1970s), demonstrates the impact of a collision between a car and a motorbike at a junction. Some alarmingly convincing simulated crash footage helps hammer in the message.

The practice of Structural/Materialist Film is defined in...process, construction, displaced reflexively...not displaced uniformly into the pattern of a narrative bound up for the stable subject-centred image. Structural/Materialist film has no place for the look, ceaselessly displaced, outphased, a problem of seeing, it is anti-voyeuristic.

The images from the series may no longer be familiar to everyone, but the slogan is still in use today.
