Isolation ist transparent

Isolation ist transparent

1974 • 39 min
"Isolation ist Transparent" manifested the concept of my video performance work. The video camera hung from the ceiling and transmitted the action from above into the auditorium, which was separated by a transparent wall. The audience saw me acting and, at the same time, they saw the camera's video recording from above. From a perspective they certainly couldn't capture in person – two simultaneous and different views of one action. I maintained this concept for my performance actions until the early 1980s. https://www.ulrike-rosenbach.de/lebenslauf/texte/videokunst-und-performance-aktion-im-werk-von-ulrike-rosenbach/

Kaskara

Kaskara

1974 • 21 min • Germany
An experimental film where a particular space is constantly "present" : there is a complex usage of superim- position, and of split-screen effects. The place shown is a part of a house in the country. Doors and windows are continually shown, emphasizing the film's concern with framing. Other images are present: city-scapes of a particularly sinister nature, implying a sense of ruin, and shots of a chorus on a stage. These shots begin and end the film which is accompanied by a vocal chant on the soundtrack.

Adland

Adland

1974 • 58 min • United States of America
TVTV turns its critical eye to the world of advertising in Adland, subtitled Where Commercials Come From. Focusing on the reality behind the image, and specifically on the strategies of Madison Avenue, they interview prominent 1970s admen such as George Lois and Jerry Della Femina. They also go behind the scenes of commercial shoots, where such figures as Ronald McDonald and the precocious child actor Mason Reese are put through grinding routines, only to reveal themselves as jaded pros off-camera. In this clear-eyed look at the manipulation inherent in advertising, the TVTV crew meets its match in the relentless cynicism and masculine braggadocio of the seasoned admen; ultimately, TVTV conveys respect for the savvy and skills of these shrewd veterans.

Open Book

Open Book

1974 • 10 min
Acconci's open mouth is framed by the camera in an extreme close-up, bringing the viewer uncomfortably close. A desperate sense of strained urgency comes across as Acconci gasps, "I'll accept you, I won't shut down, I won't shut you out.... I'm open to you, I'm open to everything.... This is not a trap, we can go inside, yes, come inside...." Acconci continues to plead in this way for the length of the tape, his mouth held unnaturally wide open. The pathological psychology of such enforced openness betrays a desperate struggle to accept and be accepted by others. The sustained image of Acconci's open mouth also evidences a sinister, vaguely threatening streak that is more or less evident in much of Acconci's work.
