Who Are We?

Who Are We?

1974 • 10 min • Canada
Canadians in search of the national identity will not find it fully fleshed in this film. An animated cartoon, it sees Canadians as pragmatists, adaptable to whatever climate or history place in their way. It is a boisterous, bubbling analysis of the Canadian character and, although it may not answer the question of the title, it does leave the feeling that being Canadian is not so exhausting as one might expect.

Maritime Climates

Maritime Climates

1974 • 34 min • Soviet Union
The colourful musical comedy Maritime Climates could have been a triumph of smart political satire – if people in positions of power hadn’t got worried by the rushes they saw, which lead them to terminate the production. In 1992, Rolands Kalniņš made this edit of the remaining material – an elegy to lost hopes and illusions.
Simparelé

Simparelé

1974 • 30 min
SIMPARELE is history interpreted through people's art. The film synthesizes the primary forms through which the Haitian people have expressed themselves in the centuries since the island's colonization by the French and the massive importation of African slaves to fuel its plantation economy. It is a composite of dance, theatrical tableaux, poetry, song, folk painting, legend and religious ritual. SIMPARELE acknowledges the powerful role which Afro-Haitian culture has played in these people's political struggle as both repository for people's history and the raw material from which that history can be reconstructed and transformed.

Framed as a warning against a U.S.-style, militarized “future,” the film critiques capitalist sci-fi imagery (spaceship battles, soldiers vs. aliens/robots) and counters with the claim that “this is not our future.”
Diamond Dogs Demo Video

Diamond Dogs Demo Video

1974 • 5 min • United States of America
During his stay at New York’s Pierre Hotel, David Bowie and cameraman John Dove made a short concept video for a proposed Diamond Dogs film. The video was shot in black and white with a single RCA video camera. It included a title screen, opening credits, and shot of Bowie standing among cardboard-cutout denizens of Hunger City. Although the idea of a larger (presumably) film production was dropped, this demo video offers a tantalizing glimpse of what Bowie had begun to plan.
